Hi all - I received, assembled and installed my SmartCap today. Here are some pics:

First impression is that the cap is very well/solidly made. Really like the gull wing doors. Assembly took a couple of hours - quite a lot of fasteners to deal with. It’s maybe an inch or so taller than I expected but that’s fine. Pretty heavy too. Wouldn’t recommend 2 people to lift up like we did! Extra leafs are on the way.

The Ranger fit kit had some issues. The biggest was the big vertical gap between the foam strip and the cap at the front of the bed.

There were some other minor issues like the rear brackets were labeled left-right incorrectly. This is the left side of the truck

The instructions don’t mention that the brackets are attached using the tie-down points, but the bolts are long enough to reattach them.

Instructions also say a bolt should go through this hole in the front brackets, but there’s nothing to thread into and no nut provided. The gap above the foam strip is also visible

Lastly, there is supposed to be a T-harness included to hook up the third brake light, but I didn’t receive this.

Bottom line is that cap is great! US spec Ranger fitment kit needs some work.

Cheers

@RangerTaz

Cap looks amazing especially against the darker paint! Excellent and thorough write up. For the third brake light harness, we'll get one of those coming your way ASAP.

Thanks for posting your pics and experience! I have mine on order and was curious how others like it. Bummer about no 3rd brake light- did you notify them and are they sending it to you?
Can you update once you get some more time with the cap to let us know about the functionality, waterproofness, etc? Thanks!

Hi Ray - I’ll update once I get this thing out of the garage! I’m assuming I’ll need to plug the gap at the front to keep out weather. Chris mentioned above he’d sort out the brake light cable. My only other feedback so far is that I was expecting this to clamp onto the top of the bed rather than having the mounting brackets, based on this pic on the website.

I have an ARB drawer in the back and the side floor will now need some cutouts around the brackets. Something to consider if you have or are planning to have drawers in the back.

I was expecting clamps too. It kind of looks like the brackets intrude on the loading width? Is it still a “15 minute” job to take off the shell?

Cap looks great! For almost $4k you would think they would have the fitment a little better sorted. It does look a little too tall relative to the cab roofline. It would probably look great with a Prinsu rack on the cab to even things out a little.

Loving my SmartCap! Waited since July for it . It’s built like a tank and has beautiful welds on it . Very happy with it so far. I was never really a CAP guy but I went camping this weekend in Pinery National Park with my kids and the massive gull wing doors and general utility of a cap made me a convert. I love having it, makes it so easy to load gear. More pics to come.

Cant wait to see more pics! Can you get a full side shot? I have a Lightning Blue Ranger and am considering the Smart Cap. Looks good with the blue.

Sure , it’s snowing here will clean the truck off in a few hours and take some shots . I love the matte black cap breaks things up. Another cool thing is you bang up a side etc...easy just replace that door. But I hope not to!

I didn’t notice much impact on loading width, but I think the width of the rear cap opening is a bit narrower than the width of the tailgate opening. There are 10 bolts with nylock nuts to take it off the mounting bracket and another 12 or so bolts to remove the brackets. 15 mins might be possible.

Edit - no real impact on loading width because the tailgate latch brackets stick out in the same location

Agree on the rack - I’m gettting a low profile Front Runner rack installed in the next couple of weeks. I’ll update when I have images.
