Right front seat head rest too far forward

I know that many manufacturers are now angling the head rests forward to prevent whiplash. The Ranger's right front seat's head rest is tipped way forward requiring one to lean the seat far back to get comfortable. Anyone figured out how to get the head rest in a more comfortable position or replace it?

It is kind of hard to describe, but you basically pull the top forward until it stops and then the headrest will pivot back. You can then rotate it (or not) to your desired position. Maybe someone else will describe it better.

It is kind of hard to describe, but you basically pull the top forward until it stops and then the headrest will pivot back. You can then rotate it (or not) to your desired position. Maybe someone else will describe it better.

Perfect description! It'll take longer to unlock and oen the doos than it will to adjust the headrest!

I learned this one the hard way - when I got my truck the passenger one was just like described. Neither me or my wife could figure out how to move it so she pulled the whole thing out and put it in backwards. It was a couple weeks later when I figured out (by accident) how they adjust.

That’s why they give you an Owners Manual.

My challenge with the Ford manuals is actually FINDING the info. My experience is that the content is indexed very oddly so it makes it hard to find what you are looking for. One example was in our C-Max - our first hybrid vehicle. It has little icons for this and that and very few of them actually make sense - we were trying to figure out what a particular icon meant and it took quite a while to actually find it. With so many icons you'd think you would have a section on "dashboard icons and what they mean" (or something like that). I think there was kind of a place like that but it wasn't in the table of contents nor the index. I think we ended up just hunting around and finally finding it. It shouldn't be that hard, IMO.

I agree re the C Max Manual. Ours was built in 2012 so the Manual was a mess. Lots of stuff in there was cut and pasted from the European version and was just wrong for our car. Among the screwups was the flat tow preparation procedure which was eventually revised in later versions (twice). And, as you pointed out, it’s really hard to look stuff up since the index is pretty basic.

The C Max headrests, BTW, work the same way as the Ranger.

Hi Rob,

It is a ratcheting mechanism that releases when pulled forward and resets when you release the headrest to its farthest rearward position. As you slowly pull the headrest forward you will hear and feel the headrest click on each ratchet tooth...

It makes perfect sense once you do it once, but until you understand how it works, I wouldn't call it "intuitive".

Sometimes it is much easier to find things in the manual when viewing the online PDF version and using the search function. I have given up numerous times with a hard copy manual and easily find the answer online in the PDF version.

Sometimes it is much easier to find things in the manual when viewing the online PDF version and using the search function. I have given up numerous times with a hard copy manual and easily find the answer online in the PDF version.
That is usually how I find it now. Until I got FordPass I didn't have an electronic manual with me, but now I do, so that is a plus.

Agree on the not intuitive... I was fortunate to discover this in the Dealer's lot when trying to fit my wife in the passenger seat and the headrest was way too far forward. I pulled on it and heard a click and the lightbulb came on and we reset the headrest. Do not recall any other Ford vehicle that has this feature. Maybe an Aussie design? Or maybe just came into industry use after I retired... I just tried to post to make it a bit clearer how to adjust.... Looks like I just muddied the waters some more....Sigh!

I think it may be a "new" thing, not an Aussie thing - someone else posted their C-Max has the same design and I just checked and ours does too. I wasn't aware of that before. I don't typically do much adjusting headrests.
