Preach, Lee, preach!

Canada has had an “always-on” DRL requirement for some time. Great idea but too many people were not turning on all their lights at dusk. Because they could see their DRLs reflecting off cars and the road and their dash was lit.

This caused a recent update to vehicle lighting here. Since 2021, new vehicles sold here must have one of the following:
  • tail lights that come on automatically with daytime running lights
  • headlights, tail lights, and side marker lights that turn on automatically in the dark
  • a dashboard that stays dark to alert the driver to turn on the lights
I say, why not have all three and make “auto-on“ default when not in Park or Neutral?
I want my dash to turn dark when lights are off at night. I think all cars should have have this if the lights are off. As mentioned too many people driving are idiots and have the lights off driving at night on DRLs and think they are good. Now, if only we could remove driver's option to force high beams on, all must be auto or off, again because too many drivers are idiots or think they are K-mart and want to give everyone else on the road their blue light special.

Guess it's only you that has personal rights and choices. As you seem to want to take them away from everyone else.

I am sorry to have diverted this thread so far off subject. I offered my suggestion to solving the problem he is having. I then, with full disclosure, gave my personal reasoning for that suggestion.

I fully expected to get some responses on both sides. Taking control away is always a touchy subject. But the truth is, many drivers do not pay enough attention to their driving to exercise that control properly. They need to have that control removed, or be prompted to exercise it.

@ControlNode , I had not expected that this discussion would turn political, although that seems to be the norm these days.

Personal choice is to drive following the safety laws or to not drive. Since so many people have proven to be too ignorant to know how to follow the laws but still want to drive, the safest option for all is to not give anyone the control of those systems anymore and make it automated for the safety off all on the road. Then the choice will be to drive an old car before the force safety systems, or buy and drive a new one.

I'm 100% for it being hard to get a license to operating a multi-ton vehicle. Even a tiered license that requires you to prove you can drive a smaller car first. I think before a driver can start the driving part of their test the tester should have a system they can enter the make model of the vehicle (or just scan the VIN) and then have a predrive quiz on the basic operation of the vehicle.

Law enforcement have also shown they don't want to be bothered with the part their job after just basic driving safety enforcement too even to count.

I'm not sure that opinions equals political.

Actually trying to take rights away from another person is very political. I fighr for my rights everytime there is a need. Looking like this could turn into a big politics blowout. However you mean nothing to me so since it's been proven by your posts you are a control freak that thinks your crap don't stink. It does. But I'll never see or hear from an elitist like you again.

Talk about making assumptions, hows the rest of that phrase go? But, nothing political, intended or otherwise, in my post. It's about safety, now how Canada has the right idea on some of their enforcement, things that FMVSS should consider adapting.
