Here's a new one for you guys! I checked to see if there were any new SYNC or map updates for my Ranger. SYNC software was OK, but the web site said there was new map software available. I downloaded the maps, went out to install and immediately got an error message and was instructed to go download the software a second time and then again.

No luck on the second try either, so I went ahead & ordered the thumb drive for the $40 bucks.

Just for fun, I downloaded the maps the third time this morning (the web page now says my maps are up to date??) and went back out to give it one more shot. Thats when I noticed something else was not right. I jotted down the ESN that was displayed on the radio screen, and then cross checked it with what was displayed on the SYNC web page. Two totally different ESN's! Neither SYNC nor Ford customer service have any idea why the SYNC web page has a different ESN. Since the map software is licensed to the ESN on the web site, it is not valid for the ESN displayed on the radio screen.

The Ranger only has 108 miles on it since I took delivery in September 2022. The radio has never been changed out. The only thing that may have happened (and I doubt there is any connection) is that I had the dealer program a remote key pad to unlock the doors. Possible I suppose, but doubtful.

Any thoughts?

I would have Ford fix it, while you are under warranty. As there will be more updates down the road.

You can take a look at Cyanlabs and download updates via usb. Note it takes a bit over an hour to do a complete update. Sync 3.2 - 3.3, 3.3 - 3.4 It's like connecting to the internet via dialup.
I had to mine this way as I added it after the fact and my VIN obviously doesn't have NAV.

Note: The VIN isn't listed in the APIM and the latest maps are ESN locked. (NA221)

I only had an issue on my last update when I had to download the latest version of Sync. I did it in my driveway (with the engine on to make sure the power stayed on) using the house wi-fi, and still had fits getting the thumb drive to load until my third try.

I rec'd a phone call from Ford Tech support this afternoon. Super nice gentleman on the other end of the line. He said that the ESN that is displayed on my radio head isn't even the correct format for an ESN and wasn't sure how or why it is there.

The Ranger is going into the shop on Monday May 8th to have the issue corrected. He asked me to email him as soon as I drop the vehicle off and then again when I pick it up so that he can verify everything was done correctly at the dealer and that the radio info is updated in their system.

He also thinks that this weird ESN is the reason I was never able to update the SYNC version OTA and had to do it manually.

We verified that I do in fact have the most current SYNC software and the most current maps and is working on getting a refund for the map thumb-drive that I ordered (because the web page said that an update was available, when in fact it wasn't)

Hoping that the dealer can get this resolved on one visit.
