We just got a letter from our town they are reassessing property this summer. Said basically they should stay on the road in marked cars and ask for ID if there is any question before shooting.

As a County employee for 34 years, I can say no they don't go inside to do an estimate for the assessor. Like you said they use the GIS software that superimposed the lot lines on the sat pic as well as landowner names. Heck I've had mortgage appraisal companies for refinancing that never came over and never drove by. They used online crap, my estimate came out good but it was inaccurate, wrong # of bedrooms and a 2 car garage not 3. Only building & or electrical inspectors have ever come inside.
I've been a city employee for 14 years, I like to tell people that I work for the government and that's all I'm allowed to say

Property Taxes here in Nebraska are ridiculous! They go up every year. Went into the Assessor's office and told them I wanted a listing of taxes on every property for sale in the county. They looked at me fu ny and said a slow O.....K........ told them with the way they raised valuations I was gonna make a boat-load and retire! They found no humor in this at all!

Yeah, I paid like $6k a year on a $200k house in Nebraska. In Colorado, it was half of that on a $750k house.

Winter keeps me from moving back to Nebraska (though I was there the last 3 days), but if I were to go back, it go over the border to Iowa.

Taxes hit ya hard here as you posted! when we bought our house in '94 it was assessed at $12K......taxes were $300. Now its assessed at $64K and taxes are $1500. 1000sq/ft and 2 stall garage. Lot 50'X150' Kansas taxes are even cheaper than Iowa I've heard!

My HOA is fairly chill. Pays for the trash, pool, and is very cheap. They don't mess with us much.

As a former utility locator I spent a lot of time in people' backyards. Often times with out them expecting me.

I was always badged w/safety reflector on, knocked first, and shook the gate for dogs if no answer. It took a lot of getting used to still though.
