small is what many people are after....this things going to sell really well.

I also saw an review of that Hyundai Santa Punani whatever, and that's going to chip away significantly at Honda's market share without even trying. And quite possibly dip into Ranger sales too.
Honda is going to get knocked down a few rungs on the podium for sure with these two new players in the grocery getter pickup market.
Where the Hyundai looks more like a ute, and the Maverick has a more truck like appearance, they will share the market at Honda's expense.
I think Honda's biggest issue with moving Ridgelines is that they don't really have an entry level model so you're paying a minimum $40,000 out the door no matter why you're buying it. For people that just want the open bed for some bags of soil, their dirty camping equipment, or that bookcase at the estate sale, $20,000 is a much more reasonable ask.

This is exactly why the Maverick is going to be a big hit. More trim options and a lower price point. There are so many who don't need a truck especially a high truck. This will be perfect for those who occasionally need to haul a few things and might be older and can't climb onto the higher tailgate or reach over the side rails of the Ranger. Perfect for the weekend warrior DYier too who might work for a company Mon-Fri and do small side jobs.

That really puts it into perspective on how big the F150 really is compared to the Ranger and Maverick. I cant believe I use to drive them all those years and now having my Ranger I could never go back to that size again. Hopefully the Ranger doesn't grow up to that size anytime soon.
I agree my brother. I loved my F-150's, but the suckers grew so big. I had to build an attachment to my garage, because my '13 Platinum would not fit into the garage no way, no how. And of course it was just long enough it went pass board length by just enough that it cost me more to build that add-on. But as the old saying goes, "if you're gonna play, you gotta pay." :)

BTW, the older I get the less I use a truck as a real truck. I have actually thought about a Maverick in a few years. Of course I would have to see one first as the bed is quite small.

I do see myself seriously considering the Maverick once I pay off the Ranger and the kids are able to drive themselves to school (about 4 years). That price point and Hybrid is what gets me interested.
Everyone says, it’s cheap for a pickup. Anyone else remember when pickups were the cheap option because they were such simple machines?

I really want to know, who wants a car shaped like a truck. Some people will never look at a different brand than Honda, but really, who wants a car shaped like a truck?

I currently drive an ‘02 F-150 SuperCrew and my next truck definitely won’t be an F-150…. They’ve grown way too much since I bought mine almost 20 years ago. My problem is I don’t want a shorter bed than I already have (5.5’) and I want a SuperCrew. If this next gen Ranger doesn’t have a SuperCrew/longbed configuration, I don’t know what I’m going to do???

With regards to sizes, it looks like the Ranger could grow an inch or two in some of the dimensions to better split the difference between the Maverick and F-150. I for one would be in favor of that change for the 6th Gen.
Hi Brian,

Bit of a back story....When Ranger first launched in 1982½ it was a hit, but there were customer complaints about seating etc. Boil down the complaints and it was determined that the customer wanted was a cab that was about 3 inches longer, so the UPN 105 program with new cab and frame added the 3" to the vehicle and the customer complaints pretty much went away...so this growth spurt continues to this day.... The Excursion proved to be too big for almost anybody and the VP of Truck lost his job over pushing the Excursion out the door to very poor sales as it was too long, wide and tall....

best,
Phili

In addition to the customers you noted, I could see it being a popular fleet vehicle. Relatively low up-front cost for the utility of a small pickup, plus the fuel economy of the hybrid must be attractive to folks watching the bottom line of operational expenses.

I was driving a 97 Ranger before getting into a 2020 XLT. Judging size I think the Maverick is really the replacement for that footprint. Ford sold millions of Rangers over decades without changing the size all that much. It’s a huge market segment that they left untapped. The current Ranger is really the size of the F150’s of the same timeframe.

In another decade we’ll all be driving pickup motor homes

Yep. I concur with all these points. I had a 2000 Mazda B3000. Not sure about the unibody thing, as the devil is in the details there, but I liked the Ridgeline, and was thinking of getting one for all the neato gadgets and internal dry storage spaces, except it was too big, too luxe, and too expensive. Ranger is still bigger than I wanted, but the SuperCab is good for me. The Maverick is more the size I wanted, but ya can't buy something if it isn't available, and I was time-constrained. Plus my Ranger XL STX 4x4 was nearly $20k cheaper than the Honda.

On the F-150, the new ones are much bigger, but the older ones are actually smaller than the Ranger. I passed a 2003-ish era stock F-150 the other day, and I could see the entire roof. Length may be another story, but the hood, roof and bed are much lower.

I just tried a 2021 F-150 on the weekend, it's big.
I find the Ranger big but we want to pull an E-PRO 19' travel trailer(or something similar).
Maverick won't pull that but I would love one.
Now, where is that PHEV Ranger, depending how it's setup, I might trade.
