Hello! I just hit 107k miles on my 2019 ranger and am getting my first CEL. I had the code read and it came up P0496 - EVAP system high purge flow. I haven’t noticed it driving / sounding any different other than some slight bucking (??) at low speeds occasionally but that may be unrelated. I’ve read through most forums on here related to this issue and it seems like it’s either the purge valve or fuel pressure sensor. I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on if I should try to replace the purge valve first or go straight to replacing the fuel pressure sensor? I did get an oil based undercoating done in the end of October last year for the first time. Also, is there any harm I’m causing by still driving?

It is most likely the purge valve; a test can be performed using a Bi-Directional scanner that view Live Data (FTP) Sensor and command the Evap Purge valve & Vent Valve (open & closed) while monitoring the FTP - PID.

This is the only way to test the system to pinpoint which of the 2 are the root cause of the code.

The EVAP Purge valve is easy access, and the FTP Sensor is mounted on top of the fuel tank, have not had to do it on the Ranger yet, but generally the tank has to be lowered down enough to get to it. The manuals call for tank removal, but you can get to it just lowering it some and be very careful as to not break off the vacuum nipple - or you are dropping the tank to get it out of the vacuum port.

Have you had success cleaning the Evap purge valve? I had one stop working and break cleaner freed it up... This was on my 2003 Maxima. It was located in the drivers side rear wheel well and overfilling the tank was the primary cause of the failure in the Max. Never had a problem after refraining from trying to fill the tank full. I stopped filling at the first click.

It may be possible and worth a try, but without Bi-Direction testing it's hard to say which one of the 2 are bad.

If the water got into the fuel tank pressure sensor atmospheric vent it could be the cause. Maybe it will dry out.

Thanks...I hope you're right...weird crap seems to happen with water and Ranger...I had all of the left side turn/marker lamps (front and back) stop working during another rain storm a while back...fixed itself after drying up... ?

It is likely the fuel tank pressure sensor. Your undercoating may have clogged the vent on the sensor. See this post #15 in this thread:

This happened to me. I had the ranger treated with that oil type undercoating (fluid film?) an the following spring I got this code. The dealer replaced the sensor an it never came back. They asked me to run the gas down before bringing it in since they would be lowering the tank. I didn't go back for another treatment after this.
