@mtsoxfan - I know this feels like a lot of hoops to jump through, but an improper cable was the first issue I ran into with the head unit as well. You'll notice the new cable will be thicker than your old cable. The data cables allow for the higher transfer speed that Android Auto needs in order to work properly.
I think you're really going to like it. It essentially makes your Ranger head unit a mirror of your phone. So if someone texts you and says "where the heck are you" - you can tap their message on the screen and it will read it to you, then ask if you'd like to respond, and you can say "yeah" and then it will say "what's your message?" and you can say "STUCK IN TRAFFIC, BE PATIENT!" without having to lay a finger on your phone.
