I'm not changing my transmission fluid in the 5g again. I figure by the time it's ready for it I may as well get a new transmission or new truck...
I won't be dropping the pan unless it's needed. I'll just pump the fluid out from the dipstick and refill.

Well its not really an emergency buuut it does change things up. I had today planned to do an oil change. Seen the Napa deal on trans fluid last week and ordered 12 quarts. Came in yesterday PERFECT!! "I will add that to my Saturday maintenance day.

I'm up at 5am and get on the O'Reilly website to order the filter for pickup. They sell motorcraft and a block away.... Not in stock. Closest one that has it is a 30min trip. Okay np..ill look up Auto Zone... Not in stock..hmmm..how about Advance Auto?... Not in stock. Well guess I'll wait till 7am and call the dealer.
It's in stock and it's $95 for just the filter..... Nooo thanks.

So I call O'Reilly as a last ditch effort in hopes maybe the website is wrong. Gentleman on the phone says "can have it here by 12". So not on the time line I had planned but it's better then a 1hr round trip in traffic. I'll have a motorcraft filter and a new seal for $60 and that's a win for me.

Sooo.. Nothing really informative. Just sharing my early morning transmission filter search.
I usually try and buy a dozen and always have a filter on hand...Amazon OEM had them as low as $4 a piece...

I can see now that my first post doesn't make it clear that I was needing a transmission filter.

I put a lot of miles on my truck. So I order oil and oil filter in bulk.

Just curious, how many miles were on your truck when you did the filter and fluid? How dirty was the fluid, and did it drive any different after the change?

Yep that's what I did. According to Ford the fluid and filter is supposed to be good for 240,000 KM! I don't believe that at all for the fluid, but in that time I can partial change the fluid 4 times and thus the particle load the filter has to hold will be considerably reduced. The transmission doesn't leak currently but I'm 90% sure it will if I disturb the seal by removing the pan.

I realise that, but I'm still sticking with my plan to see if mine can last me out with minimal effort.

I have 67k. The fluid was pretty dark but that's not always an indication it's bad. The filter material was a dark gray. The magnets had shavings on it but nothing out the ordinary.

The trans is shifting better. I am running the firm shift 87 livernois tune and at low speeds it would lurch forward after each shift. I never had issues with gear searching. It did have a tendency to hold a gear for longer then what I thought it should. I just assumed those two situations were the nature of the tune. Driving it for a couple hours yesterday, the shift is still firm but not abrupt. It doesn't lurch forward after a shift. It's also not holding a gear as long.

There is an improvement but I'd like to give it some time to see if any of the old tendencies come back. I have not dumped my old fluid yet. I'll be going to NAPA this week to pick up an oil analysis kit to get it tested. That should tell me if the fluid had any left.

Good idea, lets get an handle on how truly "filled for life" these are.

Transmission fluid life is soooo subject to how you drive, and the fluid will last a long time. If you do highway driving under light load, it will probably make the 150K miles (although I won't try it). If you overheat it once towing a trailer or with offroad escapades, then it just needs to be changed asap. Lots of "in between" variations there. I wish they made it easier to change and check.
