Modify rack system and save a few bucks?

Let me preface this by saying no major weight will be used topside on this. My intended use is to install a cargo basket of some sort. Do I want an RCI rack? Yes. Can other racks do what I want that are not RCI? Yes. I also want the ability to do side storage for equipment as well.

So here I will give you one example. You tell me if what appears to be a simple modification and if I'm missing something obvious.

I can purchase a rack of this nature for about $500-$550 and save myself $300 to go towards other items. I am assuming it should be as simple as trimming 4" off each bar and redrilling two new mounting points per bar.

Our truck bed rails come in at 62.5" on the outside edge.

I am simply unable to find racks like this for our truck yet in this price range with the included cross bars.

Red line is a cut, red circle is a new bolt hole to replace the one lost in the cut.
