I did accidentally lock the key FOB in my 2019 Lariat once, so it seems that the concept of locking the door does work, but I like the idea someone mentioned : use an RFID bag, such as the ones that come with EZPass

If someone that knows how to steal cars wants your car, they're going to take your car. Whether you have a fob or not. Whether you have a keypad or not. Being a runner, cyclist, kayaker, hiker, etc., I have locked my fob inside EVERY time I have gone out for any of these. If someone notices that I lock my car with the keypad, yeah they'll probably know the key is in it. I'm rarely in a place where I feel vulnerable or being watched for an opportunity. I'm far more protective of my bikes and kayaks, tbh.

Safe method to carry a backup key if you are locked out of your Truck:

I don't have a keypad on the 2020, but if I ever locked myself out with the key left in the ignition on my former 2011 Ranger, I had a valet key (no chip) on a different key ring in my pocket to unlock the door.

I also used to hide an extra ignition key inside the cab of my former Ranger and if I ever lost the main ignition key, I would use the valet (non chip) key carried on a different key ring to unlock the Truck and use the hidden ignition key inside the cab in place of the lost key. I was warned by two different locksmiths not to lock an extra key inside the cab. Thieves are smart and its important do everything possible to try to deter them.

To fix that, I had an extra chip key made and ordered a USB case from Amazon and converted it to a key case: Amazon.com: Case Logic JDS-2 USB Drive Shuttle 2-Capacity (Black/Blue): Electronics

I cut the top half of the plastic out of the USB case to be able to insert the extra chip key into the case: see 1st attachment. 2nd attachment shows the case closed and ready to use. I attach this case to a belt loop (always being on my person and not on a key ring) and now have a backup if I lock the regular key in the ignition or lose it.

Just wanted to share this idea for a safe way to contain a backup key.

I finally figured it out how to lock my fob inside the vehicle.
This is for a Ranger supercab (Lariat- but may work with other trims).
Stick the key into the tiny hole (marked in RED in the picture) in the passenger door and turn left a short turn. That will manually engage the door lock (see lit door lock indicator). Now close your door and lock your driver-side door with the manual key.

Or just shave the plastic off the valet key and keep it in your wallet. I have a small "runner's" wallet for riding/hiking/etc. Just big enough to hold a key, credit card and a $20 bill. Haven't tried with a $50 yet, but I imagine it will fit all the same.

I don't carry a valet key anymore only the extra chip key in the usb holder and attach it to a belt loop. I always carry my wallet in a front pocket to keep it from being lifted :)

I mean in the sense that anybody seeing you get out of your car and punch the keypad pretty much knows you're locking your keys in there. Easy enough, especially after your research, to smash a window and take the car while you're out surfing or whatever.
No, they see you push the last 2 buttons on the keypad which locks it. I use it even with my keys in my hand because it's so convenient. I get you are cool and don't need one but it's been a requirement for all my vehicles since my 96 Explorer. Smash free, theft free since '96.

How is hitting two buttons more convenient than just one? Either on the door handle with intelligent access or the fob?

I appreciate your acknowledgement of my level of cool, bit I'm not sure what that has to do with anything.

Like anything, some will like it. Some will not.

What makes your opinion more valid than mine?

Muscle memory. It's always right there. Has always worked great. 2 buttons right next together on the door not swinging around on a fob or in a pocket or on the kitchen counter.

You're welcome.

Cool.

Mostly it isn't, but maybe because I have used a keypad without issue for a quarter century and you haven't because you don't want to. I dunno. I just enjoy your angry elf replies.

I've had it on multiple Ford vehicles.

While I found it moderately useful back in the stone ages, intelligent access has made it completely useless to me.

The fact that you're old and stubborn does not make your opinion more valid than mine or anybody else's.

When confronted with new processes we often have a hard a time adapting due to having to remember the steps. Most of the time if we can get over the old muscle memory we'll find that the new stuff is pretty nice.

Ever hand a dude a new tool?

"What the hell is this? What's wrong with the old style? What's wrong with you people?"

20 minutes into actually using it, "okay, this thing is pretty nice."

Muscle memory sometimes isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Elf? That's new, I'll accept it.

Come to think of it. It's inspired a new avatar.

I can't remember the last time I locked my vehicle. Anything I have in my truck is probably cheaper to replace than a broken window. And on the odd chance they want to steal the whole truck, a locked door isn't going to deter them.

I mean, it's just a door lock. I think it's nice those buttons are right there where I'm expecting them. I could discuss how invaluable muscle memory is to a pilot but I'd rather keep this lighthearted, r5g is one of my happy places.

I didn't say my opinion is more valuable but I'd say experience is valuable. In any event, I'm happy to be my age. I take more issue with stubborn, I still think the keypad is useful for the reasons the OP wrote this thread but only because it is a useful feature that has unique advantages. When the brain chips come, I will adopt that wholeheartedly to please our Dearborn overlords.

That's cool, you do your thing. I enjoyed all of this. I dig the new avatar, it suits you.

I found another solution that works.
If you have an Apple watch you can access the Ford app from your watch and lock and unlock the vehicle with the fob and phone inside it.
