Glad to hear you're ok there Doc! My buddy retired there and has a place in Haynes City and just text me. A lot of wind and rain but no damage in his area either. He's now considering moving out of there because of all the storms and everything is super expensive there. His place there is half the size and cost more to run than his house back in MA. Insurance (on both house and cars) are way more down there and so is electricity. I think FL is going to see several years of a housing bust because it's not the cheap retirement place is once was. There's a lot of insurance companies leaving the state and prices are skyrocketing leaving many with few options.

Glad it all worked out OK for you. I work with someone in FL and they had to bug out for a bit, but he is back now and he said all is good thankfully, just some light rain now.

These storms this year are insane.....

I agree with everything except your first sentence. FEMA's mission is to prepare and preposition assets when they see an event shaping up. Coordination with Nat'l Guard, US Military, State and Local Government is Job #1.

They were not prepared at all.

They should have moved in within 12 hours. They did not do their jobs, and demanded those who stepped into the vacuum to save lives to STOP. The Gov of NC should have signed off on NG and Military use before the storm even hit the area! They knew with a great deal of certainty where storm was going and what the worst case outcome would be.

The did nothing for over a week.

Sorry, but I can't cut FEMA (The Federal Gov) or the State Gov any slack.
And you know all the details of how the response went how? A disaster declaration was made before the storm hit, and that is going to put preparations in motion. No, it did not get all the resources in place fast enough. But do you remember how long it took to get the response to Katrina going? The emergency shelters, in particular, for that one were horrifying. While there is room for improvement (there will always be room for improvement and things to learn from every incident), the recovery effort happened fast compared to Katrina. And the terrain here, I will reiterate, made things harder.

Here's a short little history lesson about storm response. It doesn't do a deep dive here, but it gives you a hint of how bad storm response was. It was better this time. But could it get even better? It absolutely can. And we need to look at the places to make improvements and actually be constructive about it.

America Forgot a Crucial Lesson From Hurricanes of the Past (msn.com)

Also a bit of debunking going on in this article that addresses some of the claims made in this thread (and repeated by Speaker Johnson, who is getting more information apparently from people who haven't been here and themselves don't know wtf is going on).

Republican lawmakers contradict themselves as they gather in Asheville post-storm (bpr.org)

MSN and public radio. Give me a break. There are whistleblowers within FEMA that tell of bad things going on. Mayorkas himself said FEMA is running out of money.

MSN is just an aggregator. If you actually read the article to see the points addressed, you would have seen that the article was published by Time. And the commentary about it tells me you didn't read it. It's interesting drawing lessons from Camille, Katrina, and a number of other storms and the responses to them. There's honestly nothing in there I can see as worth being so dismissive of.

Also not going to trust anything from Matt Gaetz. He's not a reliable source of information. Anyone going directly to him to as a "whistleblower" has their own agenda to push, and they're going to him because he will push that same agenda. Further, this claim repeated in this article is specifically refuted by both Tillis and Edwards. Tillis and Edwards have both demonstrated to me repeatedly that they are largely worth listening to.

Always the sources used to push these lies are sketchy. I've directly read both Tillis' and Edwards' statements on this. In fact, they came straight to my inbox because they are my representatives. The BPR article has it right. Tillis and Edwards both issued statements contrary to Johnson's. I trust that they have more accurate information about what's happening within their own districts than Johnson.

You really need to stop quoting MSM if you expect credibility. I trust PRAVDA more than any American MSM outlet. (I should not have to say this, but I will for completeness. I do not trust PRAVDA.)

"America" forgot NOTHING. Do me a favor and define "America" in that headline.
Nothing in American government happens by accident. If it happens, it was planned.
"In politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way."
- Franklin D. Roosevelt

Time for you to do your research. The truth is evident.

You want the unvarnished truth? I challenge you to watch this 45 minute video. On fact everyone should watch this video. It is heart wrenching and tells the painful truth about what is REALLY happening by those directly involved and living it.

What Is Actually Going on in North Carolina?

And FWIW, before Katrina hit, there was a massive US Military response in place ready to move. 33.000 US Military, and it went up to 40,000, and orders were given promptly, not 5 days later when only 1,000 NG were finally allowed in NC.

You would do well to open your eyes and do deep dive research instead of parroting MSM propaganda.

You put stuff to words better than I. Bush was beaten hard for the fake lack of response, fake racist aspect etc. after Katrina. I guarantee, that if a Republican president was in office right now, and the response to Helene was similar to the Biden Harris admin's response, they would be trashed and demonized big time.
