No story, I had a friend who did teaching when we were at uni, he ended up getting a job in the Tasmanian west coast, which is about as wild, cold, and isolated as it is possible to get in Australia. (has a similar climate to the British Columbia west coast) He had some interesting stories about "extended families"

Nah the real story is it was part of the mainland until the end of the last Ice Age, when the sea levels rose it flooded Bass Strait which separated it from the mainland and let all it's unique fauna evolve in peace.
