No story, I had a friend who did teaching when we were at uni, he ended up getting a job in the Tasmanian west coast, which is about as wild, cold, and isolated as it is possible to get in Australia. (has a similar climate to the British Columbia west coast) He had some interesting stories about "extended families"

Nah the real story is it was part of the mainland until the end of the last Ice Age, when the sea levels rose it flooded Bass Strait which separated it from the mainland and let all it's unique fauna evolve in peace.

I visited Queenstown many years ago in mid winter. It was without a doubt one of the coldest, bleakest, wettest places I have ever been. Many of the early immigrants were Scottish- probably felt homesick. Picturesque, although there was an ugly area of bare land where the copper smelter used to be, known locally as the "Queenstown Moonscape". Incredibly once the smelter was shut down, the rainforest has been regenerating all on it's own, removing what some locals considered to be a "tourist attraction" It's this area where the extinct Tasmanian Tiger, if there indeed be any left will probably be found, and where the last sightings were reported.
