I think I'll do the same thing as you did and just go with the wired controller, run the cable over the mirror when in use, otherwise store the controller in the glovebox. I expect to not get a lot of use out of the winch anyway, it's mostly for peace of mind. I did get a crash course in vehicle recovery when I needed that tow off Marshall Pass; the tow truck (F-250) itself got stuck 11 times while dragging me off the mountain and we spent over 5 hours covering 3 miles. The guys were great and taught me a lot of useful things. But nevertheless, I think I'll take your advise and find a local off-road park, learn some more.
I looked at the intercooler again this morning, and while it's bigger than the OEM, its bottom still sits in the same brackets, so I should be fine. The same probably goes for the skid plate, fingers crossed!
