I'm not a fan of the "rick-rack" sound as a deterrent as that means you have space for one more round in your weapon. In my head I've always thought I'd want the extra round already there and to not waste valuable time chambering a round. But that's only the opinion of a grumpy old man.

I always cringe when I see TV shows and movies with people forever making a big deal out of chambering a round in whatever weapon they have on them. I realize it's for dramatic effect, but that still just grates on my nerves.

this is true, much like a flashlight would also give away ones spot. its a catch 22. like does one hide or hunt. i can come up with pros and cons for both.

True but keep in mind many shotguns are not drop safe with a round in the chamber. Some are, like my 590A1.

You'd have to check with the manufacturer but iirc most are not. The 590A1 is cause it was made to pass a mil-spec test that involved dropping it.

anyone tried one of the sds tpb 12 ga shotguns? it looks like it would be a lot of fun for popping targets. i see them on sale for 199 now and then. its tempting. i think its from turkey. they have a few models on the market and all of them appear to be the same basic action in a slightly different wrapper.

Were you ever in a situation where you felt concerns for you safety ? In 40 yrs of camping with a good deal of backpacking to remote areas I've only encountered 2 instances where I wanted/needed to put distance between a person. With the huge increase in back country use assume it's accompanied by more unsavory types using the backcountry.

My background in backpacking extends to 1972 and was a backcountry Ranger in two national Parks. In my years of backpacking and full timing in a truck camper I only experienced one situation where I prepared for a situation that left me uncomfortable.

I was boodocking in a location just outside of White's City, NM. I was down a seldom used 2 tracks, to a dry riverbed, nest to a bluff. I was positioned so I could see the only way in. I was in my camper one day and observed a Chevy truck coming down the 2 tracks, towards my rig. I was inside and during the daytime one can't see into the camper due to its darkened windows.

The truck stopped outside my rig, two of the occupants had been riding in the bed holding onto the light bar. They jumped out and I watched them as they walked around my rig, some of this time I could not see them. I could feel one of them pulling on the padlock of my motorcycle trailer.

During this time, I put on my drop holster and grabbed my long gun and stepped outside my door. I am not big guy but have a look and tone of voice. "Hey, can I help you guys?"

The one that had tested the padlock came around in front of me, as did the person driving the truck, and second person. "Thought you might have been broken down."

"Nope, I'm Good."

With that, they climbed back in their truck and left. Were their intentions honorable? Who knows. But their actions were suspicious, especially if I had not been there or showed a degree of vulnerability.

If there is a threat, a round should already be chambered. An EDC, if one is trained and confident, a round should always be chambered. An unchambered gun will get you in the grave.

Yes !!!
An unchambered handgun is a hammer, and a long gun becomes a club.

It's a favorite of many reloaders. Straight-wall case means easy to reload, can do hot 44 Mag or subsonic 44 Special, and save a lot in the process.

agree , although those incidents are extremely rare I'll borrow an oft used statement on here usually stated for maintenace discussions, " it's cheap insurance" , seems spending ~ $500 to have a pistol is worth it. Most of my buds for backcountry activities and certainly those who were in my hunting club have long possessed pistols, some have quite the collection of firearms including one guy who had a tricked out AR15 that I think he had $20k in, had a huge optical scope on it and he would boast having huge amounts of ammo, maybe 20k rounds IIRC, always made for interesting discussions in the blind while waiting for birds to show regards the need for having such an arsenal.
