.22 mag are very hard to find and expensive...standard .22 are cheap and probably the most ubiquitous ammo in USA...I mostly stay with military rounds...

Tom, I have an AR in both 9mm and .22 and love them! One 9mm is a full size 16" rifle but I haven't built it yet then I have 3 in pistols ranging from a 4" -8" barrel.. The 4" one was just something I bought to play around with and it shoots really good. I have a foam pad over the buffer tube (no brace) which you just use as a cheek rest.The first time I shot it I was expecting a smack in the jaw but It's super smooth and no recoil for such a short barrel. The nice thing is they all take Glock mags so I have a few aftermarket ETS 31 round mags for it.

The .22 rifle is a S&W M&P 15-22 and it's a replica of a regular AR-15 so any parts and accessories will fit it. I love this rifle because like you said it's cheap to shoot and has all the same functions as a regular AR so you still get the same muscle memory training. The barrel is threaded so it's super quiet with a suppressor on it,you could shoot in your yard and no one would notice.

If you are only getting one and have to to chose between the two I personally would get the .22. Same amount of fun as the 9mm but a whole lot cheaper to shoot. I have no problem hitting steel targets at 100 yards with just a red dot on mine. I always bring this along with one of my .22 pistols every time we go out shooting.

How much ammo do I have on hand? Enough that I don't want to mention it on here. lol Once the prices came down I started stocking up every month,you just can't beat the prices at Target Sports and the free shipping. Then there were the Black Friday sales when they had .22's in the Federal Black Packs (1600 rounds per box) along with a $20.00 rebate per box which brought the .22's down to 2.5 cents per round. The only caliber I'm not heavily stocked up on is .223 but I'm hoping this settles down soon and will just pick up a couple cases once they're back in stock at a reasonable price.

I bought that same M&P 15-22 last year when they had a good deal on Black Friday. The red/green dot is pretty good but you can change it out for a cheap scope for longer distances. The rails are M-Lock so any AR-15 accessories will attach to it like a vertical and forward grip,lights and lasers. I had one from back east but it had to be MA compliant so no collapsable stock,no threaded barrel and only 10 ROUND mag. I sold that one to a friend of a friend who lives up in WA where they have the same dumb laws as MA and bought this one.

To many people have the fallacy that a 45 is the only caliber that is worthy of carrying. Now I wouldn't recommend using a 22 for self defense but if that's all you have available it will do the job. A couple of well placed shots into vital organs or a head shot will definitely put someone down,unless they're all cranked out then all bets are off.

My personal opinion on this is carry and shoot with what you're comfortable with because it does no good to carry a 45 if you can not handle it and you miss your target. I'd rather place 10 perfect head shots with a 22 than miss 10 shots with a 45.

A 22 is a great practice gun/rifle because you're getting a lot more practice for literally pennies per round. You're gaining target acquisition & muscle memory which will carry over shooting other caliber's.

I have a lot of .22 mag, when we had the ammo shortage, I told my wife to check the supplies in the store..( Walmart) while she was grocery shopping..she always came home with one or two boxes or whatever they had on the shelf.

I just ordered the .22. Thanks, Anyone looking down the barrel of that weapon cannot tell if its a .22 or .223..I suspect they will think its the .223 I can go shooting in the woods here. The .22LR cheap to shoot. The cost was $329.99 I guess I will pay the tax to the FFL along with $25 I looked at red dot versions but I like the scope.

I honestly don't know as I've never used them. All my 22's have been bulk pack purchases whether it's Winchester,Federal and even Remington when nothing else was available. I've had a few issues (mostly duds) with the Remington Thunderbolts like everyone else but overall my .22's will take anything. I've never even bought 1 box of CCI's in my life. lol I know they're the best .22's but I'm not shooting matches so I can't see spending the extra money for them.

I finally got a ammo notify that worked.
Just ordered 20 boxes of Federal 124 GR 9mm for $259. I have Prime with TargetsprtsUSA but the notify was from MidwayUSA, So I had to go with them to get some quick stock.
