Out of curiosity, was the valve above skid plates or just hanging in the open? I just put one on my truck since I am going to be doing the oil changes from here out, and am keeping a close eye on it, but if it's protected with a skid plate are there still chances of it accidentally getting knocked open?
I dont think his skid plate covered the valve.

For what it is worth, I have had Fumoto valves on both our Subarus for three years. No issues. (I don't have a Ranger yet, but if I went the DIY oil change route on that vehicle, I'd install one too).

For this Tacoma fail, I'd guess the valve was pretty exposed underneath. Both my Subaru Crosstrek and Forester have the valve recessed behind either a skid plate or other stuff. I haven't seen the underside of a Ranger, but as long as the valve location is pretty well protected, no worries.
