I have been driving for over 50 years and all my vehicles came with a full compliment of gauges or I added them. I don't have to take my eyes off the road for my peripheral vision to detect that a gauge is reading out of the ordinary. It is then that I look and make a determination if something is wrong. I would like to think everyone that has gauges isn't just starring at them as they drive down the road.
I know, everyone is above average. Some of the people I know that have the highest opinion of their skills are terrifying to drive with. I don't know you, will probably never drive with you, but just asserting that you're a great driver and don't get distracted and/or have superhuman perception simply isn't in itself very convincing. If everybody was as good at driving as they thought (and didn't need all the damn nanny stuff that doesn't have any purpose) we wouldn't have had almost 40k people die in cars last year. What's the solution? Probably self-driving cars because people suck at driving. Until then, doing the stuff we know is safer (reducing distractions, etc.) even when people are convinced they're the exception and don't need to do those things.

Never said or implied that I was in anyway an exceptional driver. I do know I have only had two minor accidents in 50 years of driving, my eyes are tested every year and are corrected to 20/20 and have never had the doctor say anything good or bad about my peripheral vision.

I also know that my oil pressure typical runs at 50 psi going down the road and if all of a sudden it running 30 psi I will notice that without having to take my eyes off the road. I don't want to wait until the ECU turns the low pressure idiot light on a 6 psi, that is likely to late and has caused issues.

Since they are putting digital displays in vehicles these days I only ask that I be given the choice to display what I want to see since the info is already on the CAN bus in the vehicle.

Yeah, I get it. You're sure that the odds of you noticing some random shit and minimizing a repair bill are much greater than the odds that you'll hit someone because you're distracted. I've been driving slightly fewer years, but I've been rear ended a couple of times and hit in a crosswalk by people who were also sure they weren't dangerously distracted and didn't have a history of major accidents. Everyone's a product of their experiences, I guess.
