I have been searching for an answer to my dilemma. I traded in my 2020 Ford Ranger XLT FX4 Off-Road for a 2021 Ford Ranger XLT Tremor. I had the Ford Performance Tune on my original Ranger, and I was wondering if I could transfer the tune to the new one since it is the same tune. I spoke with Ford Performance and they are having me send in my Pro Cal 4 Tuner to have it unlocked. When they send it back, they will be including a new voucher to download the tune again. I hope this helps anybody with the same issue.

That's good to know for others in the same boat. Is the voucher for a free install by a certified tech or can you now install this yourself?

My apologies for the delayed response. I believe "technically" a certified tech must install the tune still if you want to be completely safe, but I just installed it on my own initially anyways. I took the risk because I knew I could flash it back to stock any time the vehicle needed service. I purchased the tune kit from Mountune.com because of the discounted price and lack of sales tax. It is extremely easy to install on your own.

Yeah I have the Livernois tune and it only takes 2-3 minutes to flash between tunes. I just wasn't sure if the voucher was for a free install by a certified tech so you could retain the warranty? It's dumb because as you said it's so easy to do but they just want more money so they make you have them do it.

Flashing back to stock does not put you in the clear. There is a counter that keeps track of how many times the ECU has been flashed. If that does not match what Ford has in it's records against your vin they can/will assume it has and after market tune.

Ford doesn't care, except in warranty purposes, which is the only reason to pay a tech to do it. I have flashed my RV (Ford F53 V10) 5 or 6 times before taking it in for service. The only reason to RTS is if the shops machine updated the ECU Strategy you would be locked out of your tuner and have to either buy another, or beg the tuner company to unlock it.

The warranty is the whole purpose of the Ford Performance tune over one of the aftermarket tunes. If you haven't gone through the process to have the FP tune registered to your VIN and you have a powertrain issue the first thing the dealer is going to be looking at is if the ECU had been flashed and it wasn't done by Ford. Flash on the tune then flash back to stock would show to Ford as two flashes. If they feel the powertrain issue was caused by a tune modification they can and will deny covering the repairs.

What you are describing is also an issue, that is why you can buy a cap that clamps over the OBD port that is marked on the face "Do Not Flash".

If the dealer was to flash your ECU with a different strategy it is very likely even if you had gone back to stock that you would not be able to flash your tune back onto the vehicle without getting an update from the tuner.

My FPP tune is registered to my VIN, you can't install it otherwise as I had to do that before downloading the tune. My RV was updated to a new strategy while in service (auto update) while on the OEM flash, and 5* sent me a new tune free via email once I provdded the Strategy code.
Oh, and I do have a "Do Not Flash" cover on the port, just hope they pay attention to it, I also make sure the service writer puts it on the work order.

Maybe I will consider letting the dealership install the tune in this case. I was impatient with my 2020 Ranger and wanted the tune on immediately. Lead times on getting in for service at most dealers is ridiculous right now, and hourly cost for maintenance has gone up significantly. I knew I might be jeopardizing the warranty on my 2020 Ranger, but from what I had read, it is really up to the dealer at the end of the day if they want to cover something under warranty on a modified vehicle. In my case, I highly doubt my dealer would be unreasonable about having a Ford supported tune on the vehicle. If they decided to be difficult, it would likely damage the relationship and I would be going to another dealer next time.

If you didn't return the truck you sold to stock tune before selling it the new owner is going to be pissed the first time he gets it back from a service where the PCM was updated, and he wonders why it is so slow! :)

FWIW,
1. The dealer does not make the decision on what is covered or not, Ford Motor Company makes those decisions. The dealer may chose to not work on a modified car because they don't want the liability but that is not a warranty issue.
2. You do not need to have the dealer install the FP tune for the warranty. It only needs to be installed by an ASE certified technician. If you bring it somewhere else and have it installed you will be responsible for submitting receipts for the tune purchase, the installation and evidence the person that did it is ASE certified to Ford Performance (there is an email address just for this). I have gone that route twice and in both cases I have received confirmation back from FP that the warranty is registered to my vehicle.

I just thought I would provide everybody with an update to this issue since it has been a while. I sent in the tuner to Ford Performance to have it reset. I waited several weeks to get in back. It took a lot of pushing for them to finally send it back as well. When I received it and attempted to use it on the new truck. It became very apparent that the tuner had not been touched and was in the same state as before I sent it. FRUSTRATING. I reached out to FPP again and after several weeks, they finally devised a plan to have me send it back again for a true reset. Today (1/19/21) I finally received the tuner back again, and it is working as needed now. This was a 9-10 week process of getting a working unit back in my hands. A factor that may have contributed to this is that the tech I was in communication with seemed fairly new and admitted to not knowing the answers to quite a few things. It was also around the holidays where people needed for the reset were not in the office. Overall, I am glad to have the ranger tuned again, but man it sure did take a lot more effort on my end than it should have.

It took about 2 weeks from the time i sent it in until i got it back, and they forgot to send me a new voucher with it, and after a few emails I finally received the new voucher number.

They actually just sent me voucher codes through my email. For some reason they sent two over the course of my dealings with FPP. I may be able to give one to somebody if they had a tuner they could use.
