I know a guy that used ******** as his password. ?
Sure, that would work, coz he'd never remember how many * he put in, in the first place! It would successfully keep him out of his stuff, while letting in ALL of the hackers.

Mines the same. My facial recognition on my new iPhone works half the time. When I get a notification and look at the screen it won't open it to read it.
They are using The tech to train AI recognition systems. Facial/voice recognition all require large/massive amounts of data to learn. We are paying for and building our own gilded cage (24/7 surveillance system). Technology is a double edged sword. Convenience is a short step away from servitude. "If they can, they will."

I fully expect a few tomatoes to be flung at this comment and it's ok because I love caprese salad though I digress; I prefer biometrics to "must be 13 characters with one capital letter, one symbol, one number, no repeating letters, nothing used in the last year, nothing referencing the BeeGees, no family names, no pet names, nothing funny, nothing memorable" password requirements.
Use a password vault with military grade encryption. Only one password to remember to open the vault. I've been using one for years. All my online accounts are opened and logged into easily. My passwords are 30-50 characters long with all manner of characters...

Check out KeePass, KeePassX, and KeepassXC. All open source, free and KeePassXC is multiple platform ready keeping your smartphone and other devices in synch.

Simple to use too.

Slam the phone down, grab a beer, and repeat after searching for that little scrap of paper with the 3 answers ?

Just write the password on a sticky note. Really, who is breaking into homes to steal email passwords.

Facial recognition on the Pixel 4 XL was really good. But didn't work in the pandemic when I had to wear a mask in public, wish it had both the facial recognition and fingerprint reader on the back.

Personally I hate this idea. While I don't care for the huge boat anchor ⚓ FOB with the keyless entry, I'd rather it to this. My phones facial recognition doesn't work all that great and I have to use the passcode quite often to gain access. There's so many things in the real world that could happen and make this fail.

I know they say it can be updated but I see this as another solution looking for a problem. Then add the cost for this added technology which I'm sure won't be cheap to the already overpriced vehicles. Why not make them all keyless and design a smaller FOB? Unless there's an override (use of phone, or key) I don't like this at all.

What say you?

I didn’t think push button start and touch unlock was a big deal until we bought the wife a new car.

No digging in pockets or fumbling for keys to unlock the doors, hop in and hit the button. Absolute not necessary, but very convenient. Even nicer when in a dark parking garage and just want to get the heck out of there.

My phones face recognition works 98% of the time. The 1% that it doesn’t work, 1 swipe with the finger to clean the camera lens works. The last 1% is an unknown fail, but it quickly reverts to a PIN log in. I’ve had no “issues” unlocking my phone.

So then, even if they go with facial recognition to start a car, there’s still going to be a backup. Touch to unlock and push button start has backups; phone facial recognition has a backup, and all are pretty basic and intuitive.

Don’t want facial recognition? Turn it off. Don’t want power windows? Pull the fuse. Don’t want ACC? Turn it off. Don’t want lane assist? Turn it off.

There are options for just about every doodad and function that you can customize till your hearts content.

No reference to the BeeGees? I'm out.
A simple (or not) thumb print reader on the steering wheel and door would be OK. That works fine on my phone.

Reminds me when I ran over my cellphone. Immediately went out and bought a new one. When I tried to log into my Samsung account to restore all my contacts, it said "Enter the code we sent to your old phone". Yeah, Karen, my old phone is flat as a credit card!

“paying for and building”

That gilded cage has already been paid for and built. We’re just subscribing to the upgrades.

Buddy of mine doesn’t do online banking, will not order anything online, rarely uses a credit card and no ATMs. He doesn't realize that a hole in the matrix is just as easy to follow as the data.

I saw an interesting, and somewhat disturbing video about how Google tracks you, and I don't mean just your internet habit. I mean physically track your location at all times, assuming you have a smartphone.
Here it is if you want a scare. Skip to 9:15 for the interesting part.

I too won't at all be surprised if this comes down the pipe very soon, but I've got the same issue with biometrics. I just upgraded my phone last month, and my old one which was from 2018 did the retina scan, vs. the new one which does facial rec. The retina scan worked probably 90% of the time, whereas so far it would be a stretch to say that the facial rec has worked even 10% of the time. I don't mind the idea of advancing tech & progress, but I wish they'd actually get the damn thing to work reliably before mass marketing it; it seems like the "beta test" is now the initial launch.

I said this very thing about the 10R80. Hmmm...

I don't use the facial recognition thing for the phone lock. I use fingerprints. My old phone had a dedicated fingerprint reader on the back and it worked well. new phone reads your fingerprint on a certain spot on the screen and it's irritating AF. doesn't read correctly if I wash my hands or they are otherwise wet (sweaty). doesn't read correctly if my fingers are really cold. lots of frustrating times it won't work and my phone reverts to the old pattern swipe.

yeah, I've been using a password vault for a number of years now and it works a treat. I use Keeper, which is a paid service, but it is also a multiple platform system so it works on my phone and on my computers. has saved my bacon from the old compromised merchant hacks since I started using it. well, that and the fact that I don't save credit card info on merchant websites, either.

yeah, the dedicated fingerprint readers seem to work pretty well. still, thinking about it, I don't think I'd even want that kind of tech in my vehicle. there have been some very legit cases where I've needed to let someone else drive my vehicle and I would have been unable to unlock it and set up an alternate user. I was once in a coma for 18 days, and friends and family visiting to help my wife out needed to drive my car occasionally. I wasn't exactly in a position to change settings to let other people drive my car.

And I do sports with injury risks. I mountain bike and I play soccer. It seems like every week someone on the soccer pitch has an injury where they can't drive home. Or even needs an ambulance ride. Not uncommon for people to crash in the woods mountain biking and need an ambulance ride. The whole biometric thing makes it a real PITA for friends, family, or bystanders to help get your vehicle home.
