Factory Running Boards

Long story short, I put a pretty good scratch on the factory black running boards yesterday. I looked at the scratch and the metal seemed silver. Are the factory running boards aluminum? My primary concern is rust as I live in Ohio and they put tons of salt on the roads during the winter. Ifs its aluminum, I might just touch it up with a black sharpie.

Just managed to scratch mine yesterday. Debating simple paint touch-up or maybe coat with something rugged like roll on bedliner...
