Drove A Tesla Today

I have to say this is one of the better forums that I have visited. The Mazda forums are terrible... visited recently... big mistake.... won't be going back. Life is too short to listen to so much blather. So many bitter people in this world. Very sad. I don't know if it is contagious, and I didn't stick around to find out. I prefer being happy. And happiness IS a state of mind.

Since the thread title fits, 658 miles today. 12 hours. Just north of Houston, TX to back home. I could not do this anymore without FSD. It’s so much easier; I can drive much further without glazing over.

It is FSD Supervised, and still much easier than no FSD. If you don’t want to supervise it, you shouldn’t use it. Eventually it will be unsupervised, but it’s certainly not yet. I use FSD 98% of the time. There is still 2% of the time it needs my help solar storm or not.

Help me understand what Supervised means, hands on the wheel? Or some other level? I'm not trying to nitpick, I'm trying to understand.

It used to require hands on the wheel, but now it just requires the driver to be watching the road (paying attention). If you look away for more than a few seconds, the screen will warn you to take control by jiggling the wheel. After so many warnings, FSD will disengage completely and you won't be able to use it for awhile.

I don’t always have my hands on the wheel or my foot hovering over the brake. When I first got the car, I did. After a while you learn what it is really good at, and where it might need help. That doesn’t mean it won’t suddenly have some unexpected bad behavior, but it is rare. So I either have a hand on the wheel or close to it, and many times, when the car should brake, I anticipate being ready just in case.

Most of the issues are navigation, parking, or speed control; however, you have to be ready in case. It does extremely well with driving in general, but construction and school zones are still places it struggles. It can be weird in perfectly normal situations, but it’s extremely rare.

Basically I can be pretty relaxed ”driving,” but I do have to know my surroundings, and be ready to quickly act if needed. My self driving report is 10,454 miles of self driving out of a total of 10,615 miles since I bought the car.

When I bought it, at the Tesla showroom, I had to make an unprotected left turn across two lanes of on coming traffic into a construction zone to get on I435 in Kansas City and come home 52 miles away. I never controlled anything until I got to construction on K10 close to US59 in Lawrence, KS. Even then, I only took over to slow it down because it did not slow down for the construction zone.

it works amazingly well, but it really isn’t perfect; hence, supervised.

Are you on FSD v3 or v4?

Edit: I meant HW v3 or v4.
