Mostly... it's an NHRA regulation thing if your vehicles fast enough. No clue why one would be necessary for a pickup.

Used so if the front of your driveshaft comes "undone" it prevents the front of the shaft from dropping to the ground and "digging in" avoiding your vehicle from going end over end. If rear comes "undone" prevents it from dragging.
Required for all NHRA entrants of certain classes.
