Used so if the front of your driveshaft comes "undone" it prevents the front of the shaft from dropping to the ground and "digging in" avoiding your vehicle from going end over end. If rear comes "undone" prevents it from dragging.
Required for all NHRA entrants of certain classes.

Imperative for Single piece driveshafts with critical speed in the driving speed range... Not for your protection, but others around you if your driveshaft lets loose....
