It is odd the article says the diesel dually has less payload capacity than the 2wd non-dually gas engine. I would think it would be the other way around?

id be willing to be more took place than is being told lol. something like hitting giant hole in road at highway speed while also pulling a loaded down trailer full of elephants :giggle:could be a crappy job on the frame at the factory. must be that fiat steel lol.

i had a few dodge cummins trucks and we ran them hard. we would load a 32 foot triple tag with squares about six high. the trailer with load weighed 20k. we would run um down the highway like that 3 times a week. trucks never had a problem with the work. ours were the older 12valve and 24 valve 5.9 isb cummins. the new "ram" trucks i dont know much about.

TFL had a breakdown of the whole thing. Grossly overloaded truck, so Dodge denied the warranty claim as they should.

Payload ratings are just one of those things that hardly anyone pays attention to. They see a 'max towing' or 'max payload' number and think it applies across the board. This dude played that game and lost.

The extra weight of the diesel motor, trans, t-case, etc.. all take up payload.

From the looks of it, it's not just the heavy load, it's where is placed. There seems to be a lot of weight passed the bed of the truck.

I thought the whole point of dual wheels in the back was to up the capability? It helps towing only?

Well... yes... and no. It's marketing trickery really.. and why people need to do more research into things they're spending a small fortune on lol. Manufacturers pick and choose what numbers they wow the public with... to give themselves the best chance for a sale.

This is every vehicle commercial ever.. ready?

"Buy the Canyonero! Enjoy towing *up to* 20k lbs, with a *maximum* payload of 6500, and *optional* best in class fuel efficiency"

While this legend of a vehicle may be built to do ALL of that... it does NOT mean that the vehicle can do all that in the same configuration.

The canyonero might only be rated to tow that much if you purchase it with an automatic transmission.

The payload is only that high if it's 2wd and also requires you to forego a radio, air conditioning, and power features.

The best in class fuel economy comes from an optional wheezebag motor that can hardly move itself.. let alone an additional 20k lbs of trailer..

Smoke and mirrors mixed with simple ignorance leads to situations like this. Research, research, research.

Ford actually had to pay up for pulling that not long ago. Payload and MPG numbers were listed for what was essentially an 'unbuildable' truck. Was missing things like the center console and carpet if I recall.

https://www.motorbiscuit.com/false-claims-for-ford-super-duty-trucks-cost-19-2-million/

$19.2 Million

"The investigation found that in calculating maximum payload capacity, Ford used a truck configuration that wasn’t intended to be sold to customers. It omitted standard items like the spare tire, jack, and center console.

So Ford was able to add additional pounds to the maximum advertisable payload capacity for Super Duty trucks. But it was only enough to go for the best in class title."

The best thing to do is just use the number on the little yellow/white sticker and go from there. But people fall to marketing all the time. Hell, there are F150's out there that have many hundreds of pounds less payload than my Ranger but are probably dragging around 10,000# trailers and are so overloaded that they are a true danger to themselves, but someone sold them a big RV and told them they'd be fine because Ford says it will tow 12,000# or whatever number.

I put a big azz camper on my Fuso and never had a problem. The weight was distributed a little better.
