What's the difference between a 5.75 backspacing and a -12 offset?

Looking at new wheels and tires and I'm trying to compare apples to apples. I know what an offset is but no idea on backspace.

Rims we like on tirebarn site are $305.53 each, just out of curiosity I was google searching and found the same rim on Walmart of all places, $50 a rim less. Same model number but it didn't state a -12 offset so I copied and pasted the long mfr model number and googled that and 4wheel parts site popped up and it didn't mention the -12 offset but it mentioned the 5.75 back spacing...??. Due to only having 3 inches to spare on my garage entrance my tire guy and I opted to do the Bilstein 5100 lift with spacers, measure it and bring it home to see how much clearance I have left after that and then shop tires and rims.

Thank you! I know he said a "lower offset number means the distance from the back of the wheel, but what's the starting point? All the music background made it hard for my rattled brain this evening LOL. On top of all the research my 4 month old lab pup who hasn't had an accident had 2 so the cleanup took priority ?

Thanks again!

One more thing for anyone who may know for sure. On my oem 18-inch lariat wheels, do we know what the offset on them is and what is the max width tire that rim is capable of having mounted?

The offset is +55 on the oem wheel! I was in the same boat didn’t know what to go with but after researching, I went with a 0 offset and they are perfect to me.

How wide are the aftermarket wheels? We're happy to help calculate how much further out the wheels are going to sit compared to the stock 18x8 ET+55 wheels.

On a side note, here's a thread we put together that speaks towards offset and backspace.

Haven't purchased the yet, I've got a tire and wheel combo we really like but need to wait to see how the truck sits after the level lift due to height constraints in my garage. I'll go check out your link!

I want to say it's 18x9 with a -12 offset, I can live with staying with the 18 inch wheel and height if garage entry dictates, what I really want is a slightly wider tire and stance for stability, handling and looks. With my bushwacker flares my skinny Hankooks sit too deep.

Current is 265 60 18. I attached a screenshot with the 3 size options. I didn't include 275 LT tire, too heavy and may be too tall for garage after leveling.

I like the Pirelli scorpion AT plus

Thank you for the additional details.

If the wheels are 9-inches wide with -12mm offset this puts the backspace at 4.5-inches. Compared to stock, the front lip of the 18x9 -12mm offset will sit just under 3-1/4" further out towards the fender. Here's a visual, orange is stock and blue is the 18x9 with -12m offset.

Great info! Thank you. Now I just need to figure out if I would have any rub issues with up and down suspension or left and right turns or a combo of both.

I am wondering if I would be better off having the same offset wheel as oem but adding an appropriate machined and hub centric bolt on wheel spacer to get what I am after?

The 9-inch width coupled with the -12 offset is on the aggressive side. With stock size tires it may work but if you go bigger you'll likely has some rub at near full lock of the steering wheel. Spacers will not help and will lower the offset which increases the potential for rubbing. A higher offset wheel may be a consideration if you want to reduce the chance of rubbing.

I am all ears, for offset, setback etc.
