Ive been using On-X Off-road, but to be honest Im not thrilled with it. Id love something with trail maps, offline topo, crowd sourced POIs, etc.

What are you guys using when you're out of cell range?

Gaia is a popular one but they seem mainly focused on iphone platform. They have it on Android but have been silent on the request for Android auto integration.

I use Gaia and pay for the premium prescription. I download off road routes and play it on Apple Car Play in the Ranger. I'll search the web for hiking and off road routes before a trip. I'll plug that in to Gaia and make sure I have downloaded the map area. I wish they had a better Apple Watch app. Workoutdoors beats them soundly on the watch.

I use gaia too, but I’m not paying monthly for it. It worked well even offline when I was in Hawaii. There’s not really any public land around me for driving, so I use Waze locally. I have used it a few times to find fishing spots though.

Check with your state also.

CoTrex is an app put out by the state of Colorado and it's pretty nice.

I did a whole bunch of research and landed with Gaia GPS. LOVE IT so far.
Big pull for me was all of the layers and the ability to create your own. I added a layer that has all of my Ham Radio Repeaters on it so I can see which tower I need to call into if I need to establish contact.

Also big was the ability to do off line maps so I still get good nave when off cell network.

Onx off road. Tried Gaia, not great on Android. Onx does let you download off line too.
But they've gotten me lost and off the map pretty bad once.
Just not happy with any of them at this point. I'll have to do some more experimenting with Gaia, but so far it's been unsuccessful for me.

I have started using Avenza Maps. It is the same service used by USFS rangers. It allows you to operate off-line and download map layers. There is a premium feature, though you can access USGS and, more importantly for me, USFS MVUM (motor vehicle use maps) without it. I pair that with the Dual (brand) XGPS150 receiver for when I am way out of coverage. I run the app on an android phone or tablet and bluetooth connect the GPS receiver. This app also supports map layers from National Geographic and Delmore Atlas and Gazetteer, which I also carry as paper back-ups. Although for my area the Green Trails paper maps are the best.
