I have never seen anyone on the track at 4 and 8.
Its taught in evasive driving classes (generally, military classes about driving dignitaries. I have not taken the class, but a friend has. I was also being mostly facetious, given my following statement.)

I taught driver's ed for a few years at Master Drive. It wasn't a typical driver's ed. It was two 8 hour days of defensive driving exercises. Braking and handling, simple vs. complex dynamics, skid recovery, crash avoidance. We taught 9 and 3 and two styles of turning the wheel: arm lock (hands stay in the same position and rotate the wheel (up to) 180 degrees and hand to hand feed. Hand to hand is used when you have to turn your head to see the exit of your turn.

I thought it was 10 and 2? Have I been driving around unsafe for the last 40 years?
You have to remember, our old friend RP is in Canada. Maybe they use the metric system on their clocks also. :bandit:

They work great for those of us old enough to remember them!

They basically only have this product available for 2 vehicle platforms and they are over a decade old. I think a 3 year old 10 speed may be a tad presumptuous.

If you could control the TCM real time with the CAN via OBDII, tuners would have figured it out by now.

Last night I came across a company called CanShift. They design wireless paddle shifters that shift the trans through canBus. Seems wild but I would love to have the option of shifting my gears via paddles.

This is off-topic for this thread, but this is giving me ideas for possibly solving the Trail Control / Traction Modes without swapping out the XL dash cluster. It may not work, but if the TC status messages are sent over the CAN bus, maybe a small auxiliary display that can read CAN bus messages can be programmed to detect and display the relevant Mode information, even if the normal dash can't.

Everyone talking about the lil +/- to up/dwn shift are insane! That thing is so ergonomically terrible id likely form carpal tunnel.

Id rather have a paddle shifter instead if just driving on D/S because the system sucks picking a gear -imo. I havent driven many automatics in a truck, but in a car its much smoother. This is also exaggerated for myself because ive only ever owned manual vehicular all my life. And in the end i can shift better any automatic system period.
+1 on this. I feel the same. Automatic transmissions all have the following limitation: None of them know what you are ABOUT to do...

Two of my last cars had "manual" shift options for the automatic. I only used them in really bad weather for more engine braking. In the ranger, I have sport mode and its overly aggressive engine braking or button-pushing if I need more control.

Ill pass on wheel-mounted shifting with this engine/transmission. I've seen it going thru the gears when I want to haul ass - it does a good enough job.

Hey BassRanger,

Jon from Canshift here - we definitely are able to control the transmission on newer vehicles too! It's kind of an interesting story on the origin of the business. Fun fact, we're coming up on our 1 year any day now...

Right now the biggest roadblock is getting access to vehicles for testing

Hey Dave - Jon from Canshift. This intrigues me, definitely something I could look into. I would need access to a vehicle with these options.

What exactly is TC mode and what would you expect the external display to show? Our current product uses a 4 digit, 7-segment display, but this is soon to be replaced with an OLED which would allow for more data to be displayed

I'm waiting with bated breath, for someone to install such an accessory. Why? Because I know, sooner or later, the owner in question is going to over rev the engine once too many times. And just wait until they find out how much that will cost! And what for? Less than .1 seconds to 60 if they shift the tranny just right? Not for me!

I've been contemplating putting one on my milktruck, but the questionable legality on a DOT/OSHA regulated vehicle have kept me from doing it.

30-40 turnarounds in the middle of the street per night gets a little tedious sometimes.

I wouldn't worry about it...I've never been hassled having it on my trucks for many years...

Of it were a personal vehicle I wouldn't worry about it at all.

But on the work truck I'll just grin and bear it while bitching about the idiot driver who flowed his route with all these damn turnarounds!
