I'm planning to install a proportional brake controller. I'm not a wire guy but it looks to be within my capability. I've located the 4 brake controller wires in the truck (could they make them any shorter?). I plan to use an adapter harness between the controller and truck wires.

Can anyone tell me:
  • The gauge of the truck wires so I can size some terminals/connectors and get the proper tools?
  • A suggested way to make the connections? There seems to be a large difference between the 4 truck wires, especially the violet wire, and the wires in the adapter harness.
  • The best way to remove the heat shrink on the end of the truck wires so I can maintain their length?
Thanks in advance.

Just did mine. 12v (yellow) and trailer (blue) are 12ga, ground (white) and brake on/off (white/violet) are 20ga. I used 16-20ga (red) and 10-12ga (yellow) crimp on butt splices.
My P3 harness had 16ga for ground and boo, and 12ga for 12v and trailer. Mounted nicely in the center console.

edit: you need to cut the blue tape that holds the brake controller wires together— that should give you enough to work with even after you cut the heat shrink portions off.
