Blizzard-Ice Storm January 23-26, 2026

***I thought a lot of you should be aware (if you weren't already) of this huge storm. Hopefully it shifts again but it's been getting worse not better. I'll move it to the Off Topic section once it's over.***

I've been following this storm for a few days (I've always been a weather geek) and it just took a turn for the worse. They were expecting more snow south and now it looks like more ice from all across the central states to the east coast and north east over the weekend. Dallas is like 1 degree away from being in another bad ice storm so hopefully you guys will warm up some. I gave up on local weather years ago and have been following Ryan Hall Y'all who's been much more accurate.

A whopper storm could soon engulf a 2,000-mile stretch with snow and ice.

Significant snow and ice, as well as frigid temperatures, will affect more than 200 million people across the United States.

This weekend, hazardous wintry weather from the storm will affect dozens of cities simultaneously, including Dallas; Oklahoma City; Little Rock; St. Louis; Indianapolis; Louisville; Memphis; Nashville; Columbia, South Carolina; Charlotte; Norfolk; D.C.; Baltimore; Philadelphia and New York. The storm is also expected to reach the Great Lakes, Northeast and New England, where it will hit Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Buffalo and Boston. Some places in this stretch will probably receive more than a foot of snow and/or crippling ice accumulations.

During the storm’s peak, expected Sunday, around 55 percent of people living in the contiguous United States are forecast to experience snow, sleet or freezing rain at the same time.

Temperatures will dip lower than minus-30 Fahrenheit as the polar vortex dumps dangerously cold air into the Midwest, Great Lakes and New England through the weekend.

As that frigid air flows southward, it will meet an atmospheric river streaming from the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, spawning the widespread winter storm. It will be the biggest of the season so far, with its impacts made more severe by the brutal and long-lasting cold that will follow it.

This is going to be amazing to watch from the sidelines. The blocking high over the west is helping create the gathering of the moisture and cold fronts creating this situation.

Clay, you may get a chance to use your 4WD. If you end up getting ice it could be treacherous so stay safe on the roads.

We're used to big snow storms but rarely get flash freezes and ice storms to coat the roads. It's brutal.

I thought you were on that fine line of snow and ice so be careful on Friday. I'm glad the TXDOT is prepping for this but I'm sure they have limited equipment because it's unusual for a storm like this to hit there. As Steve said you might finally get use 4wd but remember it doesn't much if anything on ice. Slow and straight is really the only way to drive in it and make slow turns.

We're used to big snow storms but rarely get flash freezes and ice storms to coat the roads. It's brutal.

I've had my share of ice storms back in MA. They're so much worse than an 18" blizzard which I'll take any day over ice. The black ice is the worst and I've been ass over tea kettle walking down my driveway getting the mail from it.

It looks like souther MO is going to get hit good. I'm so glad we're not in Arkansas now! It looks like a good 8" of snow but they're right in the pink for ice too.

I'll keep an eye out and update this as things change. I get notifications from Ryans YouTube feed which he's very good at sending out new videos as things change.

Yes, nothing like stepping onto the top stair and next thing you know you are on your tailbone and back at the bottom of the steps.

I've done exactly what this first guy did.
