I am having a problem with my 2005 Ranger with hard starting. Initially If I wait a few seconds it would start right up. It has now progressed to the point where I need to turn the ignition on 3 times to get a quick start. (2 second fuel pump cycle each time I turn the ignition on) This leads me to believe that my fuel pump is either weak or the pressure valve is failing allowing the fuel rail pressure to drop. It really doesn't matter which it is... because if I am opening up the tank I'm replacing everything with new parts. I've gotten my moneys worth out of those 18 year old parts.

So I am planning to change the pump assembly and I only want to do it once.

The big question is who makes the most reliable fuel pump for my Ranger?

Any and all input is appreciated!

I really feel pretty good about it lasting 18 years!

Can you still get an OEM pump? If available, that's what I would do.

I really don't know what the best is, but on my '99 I bought just the pump and filter sock on Rock-Auto. About a year later it left me stranded and I had to get towed home. As it was a weekend, I bought a complete assy. online from Auto Zone, mainly because they delivered it the next day. I kept the truck for another year, and the guy that bought it from me is still driving it, so I know it lasted at least 3 years.
And don't forget to change the fuel filter. In fact, do that first, in my experience, electric fuel pumps work, or they don't.

I would check and see if an OEM is still available. If so, that’d be your best bet for reliability. I would also check your inertia switch and its connector for melting due to high resistance in the fuel pump. It’s in the passenger foot well.

I am trying to avoid your experience. I think the pump is fine, it's the pressure regulator built into the pump assembly that I suspect is the problem. It leaks down over time and has been erratic going weeks without a problem, then suddenly hard starting - or simply waiting for the system to re-pressurize and easy startup.

Yep, I have not looked at inertia switch yet, but it has crossed my mind. Thks!
