I was out tooling around today on backroads, and put my foot into it going up and down hills, as one does. I got the RPMs up to about 5k in a short period, then let off it completely, and I heard some pop pops. The stereo was up, so I turned it down and did it again. Def some backfiring pops. Nothing major, and I'm not worried about it, I have just never heard it before, but also haven't gotten the RPMS up that high in a short period and then let off completely.

Anyone else heard such backfiring?

Do you have any exhaust modifications? A tune? It is normal for an engine to do that, considering we have valve overlap as well. 4 bangers are more common for this too.

Its unburnt fuel in the exhaust. 4 cyl is giving it all and poof you let off. It happens. Could be cause for concern if you weren’t flooring it up hill.

Nope, completely stock. I usually don't 'get on it' like I did this time, so I'm not shocked I've never heard it before. I was just having a jolly. It's completely broken in, 26k miles or about, and it was only after I let off the peddle.

Thanks for the info. As said, I wasn't too worried about it, but it makes sense what you said.

Glad to be of service. If it happens under light acceleration I would be concerned. But so many flaps close and relief valves open when you let of some fuel could sputter out.

Maybe it identifies as a Focus RS ?

My RS does that, especially in Sport mode. Of course it was tuned to do that by Ford. Basically the same engine.

Sorry for the smart a$$ reply. I'll let myself out.

LOL. I was just curious cause I really haven't heard backfiring from anything recently, other than a ricer :)

Backfiring is so last century. When I first heard it, I thought it was something on the stereo. Def a pop pop, but the muffler was working perfectly, so more like a pillow fart :)

For the record we have a ricer. Just more of a Spanish rice less of a Japanese rice. The 2.x engines were originally built in Spain.

So you won't be adding one of those megaphone exhaust tips to your Ranger? ? ?
