Cars used to have a built in napping place for kids

I'm told I preferred the standing position for naps.

I used to lay in the back window & look at the stars as we traveled. Loved it! ?

we used to travel From California to my Grandmothers place in Missour. 1951 Chrysler Imperial. Dad had a piece of 3/4” plywood he would put on the back seat. That became our sleeping / play area while we traveled.

We had a used '69 and then a new '78.
Weekend trips to the cottage with mom, dad, g'ma, 3 kids and a Husky in the back along with all our cloths and food for the weekend. Week long trips just required another suitcase full of clothes. Towing the boat to the lake or river.
Drive-ins on occasion, parked backwards, with us kids in the back, mom and dad in lawn chairs outside.
Hauling lumber, shingles, pipes and whatever for projects, Christmas trees tied on top. Mom hauling me and a bunch of friends to whatever event we had.
Took my drivers test in one and was a great date vehicle. Bench seats and wide open back.
Hauling a bunch of friends around to movies, parties, mall...
Mom ramming my car in the rear end with it when she caught me cutting school.?

Yeah, we had the Ford Country Squire with the flip up seats in the way back for us kids. I remember doing all that stuff you mentioned.

Just last night finished this puzzle. Been laid back since the MRSA knee infection set in. Wife purchased these puzzles to keep me occupied. She knows what keeps my attention. I owned a hot rod 57 Belair in High School, and I learned to drive in this 59 Ford - both standard shift. And I built 1/12 Scale Models of the GM EMD E Unit Locomotive in the background.

She treats me well. ?

This was back before all the numerous interstates, so traveled on the US highways. Stopping at Howard Johnsons for meals, ice cream. Staying at mom n pop motels and bungalows. When on the interstates, stopping at the Stucky's for meals and souvenirs.
Remember stopping at South Of The Border on the NC/SC state line when it was just a wide spot in the road.

I must post this for those who have never experienced South of the Border at the NC/SC line on I-95.

$2 gets you a ride to the top of the Sombrero 200' tall. Pedro is 90' tall in the lower left.

Back when NC was a dry state, folks bought their booze at South of the Border. They still buy Fireworks here, as they are still illegal in NC.

Kids used to elope to Dillion to one of 5 or 6 wedding chapels, get married and spend their Honeymoon at South of the Border. Back then 14 year olds could marry in SC. BTW, NC in 2021, just raised the minimum age of marriage from 14 to 16 with parental consent.

amen!!! all my trucks up until i was around 26 all had bench seats. man i miss those. miss the "seat covers" too.
