2020 XLT FX4. Hello everyone. I was wondering what is the different between the the snow/grass mode and the Rut/ mud mode.
Little history, I have experienced wheels slipping in the snow mode, and all over my lane. (No I was not speeding) thought it was the tires. went back to just normal 4x4 and ran through the snow a lot better. a Year later 3/1/22 we have 3 inches of ice, a layer of snow pack and on top of that 6 inches of wet slush with spots of mud and Ice/slush ruts and was in snow mode and rear locked in and the truck was all over the road again and almost got stuck. So I was messing around with the T/M and put it in rut/mud with the rear locked and the truck walked out and throught the creek bottom with little to no hassle. I usally just run 4x4 with the rear locked and done fine, But not today, but that rut/mud mode (wow). So I was just curious as to what is on or off during the snow mode and what is on or off when your in rut/mud mode.
Thank you.

I think I found what I needed to know. The optional, class-exclusive1* Terrain Management System allows you to easily shift on the fly into one of four settings to match the terrain you're driving on: Normal – biases torque to the front wheels and sends it to the rear only as needed; Mud/Ruts – switches the throttle to a more aggressive mode, limits upshifting and desensitizes stability control, allowing the tires to spin as needed; Sand – the throttle throws maximum torque to the wheels, placing the transmission in lower gears for as long as possible, which allows the wheels to spin aggressively; Grass/Gravel/Snow – places the throttle in a setting to minimize wheelslip.

Turn your locker off. There's no need for it driving down the road unless you have FEET of snow.

That and your apparent lack of experience probably led to your loss of control.

I noticed on my 2021 Lariat FX4 that in snow mode it wouldn’t lock the rear axles. It also seemed to be braking softly when I let off the throttle.. It drove great on snow and ice.
I don’t think it would be a trim level thing but maybe or maybe you need an update???

IDK it’s worth checking out..

My lack of experience? Dont make me laugh so hard. Total snow up here was about 38 ". I have 9 miles of dirt road till I get to pavement. and for the loss of control, Which I never said I lost control of my vehicle, maybe i should of put felt like its all over my lane, which not even close, when i start to slip a few inches one way then the other it feels like your all over the place. if 5 mph is too fast then I dont know what to say. because your not going any faster on this road in the winter time, you will end up going off a side cliff or in the creek bottoms. All I wanted to Know was what is working and not working in Snow/grass mode and what is working in Rut/Mud mode. And for my lack of experience, (As you say) I was the only vehicle that made it out and in that day, So I guess the ones who got stuck must of had way to much experience?

I apologize. I tried my best to understand your story. Next time try composing a complete sentence and you might be understood.

I apologize also. All I wanted to know was how the 2 modes operated differently from each other. Just wanted to try and understand the system better.
Dealer told me to turn traction control off. I been trying to research the T/M but not finding anymore info on T/M.
Thanks.

I believe TM is for lower speed off-road driving only. I don't think it's intended for snow-on-road at driving speeds.
