OP Ford has been using liners made of some sort of felt for quite a few years. I can tell you that rocks picked up by the tire and thrown into the well are way quieter than with a plastic liner. Thats about the only thing ive noticed.

Since its in a obscure location any repair should be not easily noticeable if it makes you feel any better. Worst case scenario tailgate is $800 + painting + $40 latch if it broke. $900-$950 tops for hard parts. Plus whatever painting costs.

Michelin LTX M/S 2 Ride is great, traction even in blizzard conditions is great, quiet, about 50k miles on them and they are worn about half. With easily 10k of those haulin 7000lb camper. Not cheap though. Had on a 02 f150.
