plus I’d need about 1.75 more acres
They'd happily eat birch buds like a grouse. And If you use that other acre to grow the gain, you can store it over winter in the barn and feed it to the chickens :)

And since it's 1+1 acre for 50 chickens, and you seem to have 0.25 acres, that means you could run 6 chicken farm on it!

Put them all in the attic!. Half attic for the chickens and half for the grain in bags, divide with chicken wire. Residual heat keeps them warm, chicken shit doesn't smell so much in the house and they eat the small rodents (including mice!) freely there.

Chickens do eat mice, they're related to carnivorous dinosaurs.. They'd probably eat a babies if they could get one on their wings.

Best solution is have freinds who have chickens. My wife works with someone who has chickens. We supply her with old egg containers and get free eggs every few weeks. :like:
