So i installed the mbrp catback today and i have small leaks at the two 3 inch clamps before the muffler. Behind seems fine (guessing not enough back pressure to leak after the muffle). The clamps are fully closed and tight but still have a lot of play in those joints.

guess where im going should i get new clamps and any one else have this issue with the mbrp?

No leak at the 2.5 joint to the down pipe btw

With those clamps you need to torque them to 50+ Ft lbs of torque, so maybe check the torque on them.

I always use these for slip joints. They are super secure in holding the exhaust together, but the aluminum bar where the bolts tighten down is not stepped to take into account the OD to ID of the 2 mating exhaust pipes (its flat so can have little leakage due to that).

The flat band clamps that have the pipe just butt up together are the most leak free. Autozone sells them on the shelf now, while Napa and Advance sell behind the counter (have your part number ready in that case).

Yeah they are way over 50ft lbs

i loosened everything and was able to seat the joints a bit better. Still a very small leak so ill look into those clamps. Thank you for the help!!!

I installed the MBRP cat-back single exhaust this weekend and am running into a couple of issues with these 3" band clamps. Similar to the OP, I have a little wiggle in some of the pipes, but that not my main concern at the moment.

The band clamps' bolt head functions as a locking mechanism. One of the 3" band clamps has its bolt head function free-spinning and I am unable to tighten. All others worked fine. Anyone know how to resolve this issue? I may just contact MBRP / Stage3 Motorsports and see. In the meantime, I can't be driving around with a loose pipe.

Vise Grips maybe ? Exhaust heat wrap around the joints first, then add clamp and tighten.

Vice grips on either ear section so you can squeeze it together Then the locking plate by the nut should be loose. You want the left side of the ear to be against the center section at all times.

The issue is the bolt head (the part you see in this photo) is free spinning (you can see it out of alignment). So those little ears are the clamps aren't putting enough pressure on it to keep it locked into place. I've tried vice grips on the bolt head itself, but there isn't much to grip and it breaks loose. I will certainly try what you suggested and squeeze the ears together. Maybe with the ears pinched in, I can get a betting grip on bolt head and keep it from turning.

You see the ribbed section in the center of the bolt? That ribbed section also helps the oblong head from spinning.

Ah -yes. This may be part of the issue. The ribbed bit almost looks "stripped". Thanks for the help. I'll see what I can make of it after work.
