I ordered my Ranger Lariat 4x4 with the towing and technology (501a) packages in Sept. 2021. It took some nagging but the dealer finally got me the VIN about 10 days after the order was entered so I could track it's progress online. I did NOT get any emails that the order was entered or confirmed by Ford.

When I contacted my dealer asking if my truck would be built as a '21 or as a '22 (prompted by an article I read saying Ford was contacting customers with vehicles on order asking those customers if it would be OK to build a '22 for them), I was told my truck would be built as a '21 the week of November 22, 2021.

Come November 29 and the status of my truck is still 'order confirmed', the same as it had been on the first day I checked in late September. On Dec. 3, I got a call from the dealer to get my OK to order a '22 Ranger. I gave that OK and disappeared into a black hole - no further dealer contact. I was not told if the '22 was added to the same order or if a new order was created. The sales guy seemed to think it was a new order (and I thought, 'great - I'm back at the end of the queue again').

More nagging ensued, usually once or twice weekly, including calls to Ford Marketing, who told me that the existing order had a '22 Ranger on it. As of today (12/27), I still do not have a VIN for the '22 so I have no clue where it is in the build process. Calls to the dealer business manager are not returned; Calls to the sales person result in him having to go nag on the business manager to find out that no VIN has been created for it.

If you ordered a Ranger anytime in the Fall or Winter of 2021, what has been your experience getting a VIN for a '22 on order from when your order was entered? How long after getting this VIN did you find out the projected build week for your truck? Were you checking the web page or waiting for emails?

I've seen posts here and in the Reddit /r/FordRanger community that getting a VIN seems to take from a few days to nearly a month and I'm just looking for a ball-park estimate of when I should expect a call about it.

Did all of you with trucks on order begin getting emails of the status and providing your VIN and production dates? I'm guessing that since I'm not getting any, my dealer didn't put my email in the order (they don't seem to be savvy to customers wanting to be kept up to date via email and via the web page). Any one also have this experience and were you able to get them to update the order with an email? (BTW, I'm thinking of calling Ford Marketing and asking them if my email is in the order and if not or if it's misspelled, correcting this - but I'm not sure if they will usurp a dealer's customer contact need to fix this.)

Thanks for any insight you can offer in this. The Ranger is my first on-order vehicle and while I understand the situation in the industry these days, I'd sure like to be keep in any loop without nagging.

I can't speak to 2022 models, but I ordered a 2021 Ranger Tremor in September and assume the process is the same. I did this all online/email starting on 9/19. By 9/20 the dealer sent me the build sheet and gave me my order#. I have never received any communication directly from Ford, it has all been through the dealer.
I followed up about a month later and received the VIN on 10/27 (salesman told me it takes a couple weeks). From that point, I have been following it online via the tracking website but the website doesn't always work for me and when it does it is somewhat vague. Case in point, fast forward to today and the truck is sitting at the railyard in Florida waiting to be delivered to the dealer only 40 miles away with a delivery date of 12/27 (today) - 01/02. All the website says (when it works) is that it is on its way to the dealer. As an FYI, original delivery date was 12/29 but changed to 1/1 a few days after I first checked and has stayed consistent since that time.
My truck was produced as a 2021 on December 6th so I imagine you have no VIN yet since they were (or maybe still are) producing 2021 models. I would prefer a 2022 at this point but beggars can't be choosers....I sold a 2020 2WD Lariat for above the original MSRP ($40k) at the end of August and I paid significantly less (around $32-$33k) since I bought it in May of 2021 as it was used as a service loaner vehicle with only 2,700 miles.
Once you get the VIN, you can call Ford directly (800-392-3673) and depending on who you talk to, they may provide you more details. I got lucky last week and the woman I spoke with said, "I shouldn't tell you this but the truck is in Florida waiting for transport to the dealer." I got the same message from the dealer today so at least I know it is here but I told them I need it before January 3rd as I do not want to lose out on the rebate or the private cash offer I am sitting on from Ford (both expire on January 3rd). I have found some Tremor's at another dealership not too far from me on the lot and will just buy one of those if I cannot get delivery by January 3rd.
Hopefully, this provides some insight for you and I think the dealer engagement is key as mine is pretty good and responsive on things.

I ordered mine on 9/28 (this is my first time ordering). The order was placed as a '22 order. I got an email confirmation on 9/28 from Ford. I then got another email on 10/28 with a VIN and an initial build date (week of January 3, 2022). Since, I have received a couple of emails from Ford with schedule changes for the build date but other than that, no other status. When I put the order in, the dealer said to expect to see the truck no sooner than six months.

Interesting. My dealer said 8-12 weeks. I think your dealer is being very conservative with 6 month wait.

Ordered mine as a 2022 on Oct 30. OK’d the build sheet, put in the deposit, and received the confirmation email from Ford, all on the same day. This first build was a XT level, with 301a, STX, Drop In bed utility, Towing packages. Heard nothing from Ford or dealer for a month an a half, no VIN no production date, nothing. Mid Dec, on advice from this site and also Blue Oval Forums Production Scheduling Notes, I changed my order to a XLT level, with only the FX2 package. Made the change on a Monday and the order was scheduled by Ford, along with sending the VIN, the following Thursday Dec,16. Thursday seems to be the day that Ford sends out the new scheduling orders.

XL Iconic silver crew cab RWD with 101A package, E-locker, and STX package.

September 17th: Placed order with $500 deposit at local dealer.
November 15th: After constant nagging, salesman finally says order will be rescheduled to a 2022 model year.
December 18th: Ford sent confirmation of order received.

Thats all I know, took 3 months to get an email I should have received within a week of ordering. Will cancel my order if I hear nothing by end of jan. First time I ordered, and will be the last time for sure.

I understand why people do it but doesn't sound like a streamline process ordering from Ford. I hope this isn't the future of truck buying as dealer lots have such few options on hand right now.

Actually had a little surprise, order was originally put in as '21 but dealer called back an hour later and said we missed the cut off and changed it to a '22. Didn't have tow package originally and i called back a few days later to add it. Apparently ford ended up accepting the '21 and I got a call that it was at the dealership on 12/16. Sadly the tow package only got added to the '22 so I had to forgo the '21 and keep waiting. Truck was listed on their website Wednesday and by Thursday morning the listing was gone, lol.

September 29th: put down deposit and build was sent. 2022 XLT crewcab FX4
November 6th- VIN assigned with an build week of January 10th 2022
December 21- build day of January 11th 2022.

my dealer/salesmen has been updating us on every change that comes up regarding my truck, been super easy to deal with.

A mechanic I know ordered a Ranger as his retirement gift to himself at the end of October hasn’t even got his build date yet and he’s at a different dealer just 10 mins away from where I ordered, he’s getting frustrated.

The 501A has more technology than most so more “chips”. Good choice btw but it will probably be a longer wait. I got my 2021 on May 1st while it was on the lot with no dealer added crap and with incentives… but this chip shortage has become a ball Buster!!!

Ordered my wife’s 2022 Maverick lariat hybrid end of August and still no build date.. I got the confirmation email from Ford the next day so I know it’s there somewhere..

But hey a 2022 model ain’t too shabby either..

It will be built but when?? Who knows but the wait is the hardest part that will soon be forgotten after delivery… still loving mine after 7 months!!!

That's to the best of my memory, at least. Have fun, the wait sucks.

My dealer said 8-12 weeks when I originally ordered in Sept, 2021.

Agree with assessment that the dealer is being conservative but others have postulated that some of the higher technology packages might be delayed by the global chip shortage.

I laughed at your abbreviation for the SuperCrew cab configuration!!!! Thanks! I guess mine should be abbreviated as 'Scab', just as bad.

Thanks! Yes, the higher tech packages might be causing a delay, but I'd like to know this! I'm mostly disappointed by the lack of communications from Ford and my dealer.
