First time truck owner here. I want to put my street bike in the bed, but I am concerned about the weight on the tailgate while loading. The heaviest bike I have is around 500 lbs and I'd like to ride it up into the truck (I have wide ramps). I'm about 180lbs. I could also walk it up under power which may better distribute some weight but prefer the first option.

I think the tailgate limit is around 480 lbs.

My next question is the rear tire will be near the end of the tailgate. Will it be ok like that, or should I put a piece of 3/4 ply in the bed to better distribute the load?

Third option is renting U haul trailers for $17 bucks a day.

Thanks in advance.

I can't answer for loading it, though I suspect it will be ok. As for having the rear tire on the gate, you will be fine. I know they're a lot lighter, but I've had 2 dirt bikes and a pit bike loaded in my truck with no issues. Well within the weight limits.
