After joining another ranger forum a year or so ago.. I was enlightened to the fact that not everyone calls a cap... a cap. Some of you (wierdos) call them camper shells, or toppers.

This made me uncomfortable honestly.. like the people who call a driveshaft a drive line.. wtf?

Its clearly a regional thing... it must be.. right?

So... where are you from... and what do you call a truck cap?

I'll start. I'm from Maine, and we call it what it's supposed to be called.. a cap.

Your turn!

I.apologize for the nonsense BTW.. one too many Irish car bombs for me tonifht.. which was one...

I don't drink lol. More of a grass man. This is why.

I do tree work. And when moving a 300lb log from the back yard to the front yard we use an industrial strength, oversized dolly with inflatable tires. When I moved to Colorado and started working for Davey tree they told me "you're going to need to bring the ball cart with you today"... Wtf? Ball cart? Why do you call it that. I call it a "log dolly" because that's what it is and that's what it does! They laughed and still I'm the only one at the shop that calls it a log dolly. Also where I'm from we call it a capper.

End rant.

Born and raised in the Adirondacks in NY, we call it a cap. I'm in NH and ME now and it's still called a cap.

Kanak from Hawaii- I’ve always called it a camper shell, even when we lived in Kentucky and Tennessee... but then again, people always thought we were weird.

Canuckistani here...

Grew up calling them a canopy. Hear lots of folks calling them caps.

Related note - for most of my teenage years me and my friends referred to a box cover as a tuna cover. It was a few years later in life that I learned the correct pronunciation was *tonneau*.

California, Arizona and Washington state background. Camper shell. Never heard the words “cap” or “topper” until I joined this forum.

Ps..If your camper shell is a cap, what do you wear on your head ?

I’m in the ”topper” crowd. I grew up in the Rainy River District in North Western Ontario. My old man always called it a cap or “capper”. (But he was from Southern Ontario and didn’t know any better ?).
Oh, and Chris, if your truck has a cap, you wear a “lid”...?

Southern Ontario here, only ever heard them be called a cap. Camper shell is a head scratcher for me, wouldn't want to sleep in my truck box personally lol. I know a lot of people do, but it can't be the primary reason for most people to get one. Topper works, but yeah it'll always be a cap for me.

WA State, pretty sure most people call it a Canopy here (but I could be totally wrong). I'm still waiting for mine to show up. Couple more weeks!

Grew up in Maryland, live nearby in West Virginia now, always called it a cap.

Lived in California for about 5 years, I heard camper shell a lot.

a hat?

and I ask you a question back...are you really camping in there?
Twice in 25 years, and then only because of a rain downpour and the tents were muddy and wet. That was when we had trucks with six foot beds.

I camped in my Ranger, but that had a 6' bed, this 5' bed isn't long enough. I bought the cap mostly to keep the dogs back there and keep stuff dry.

I’ve camped in them (in different trucks) plenty of times. I’ve even camped inside my XJ (I’m 6’1). When I get my camper shell, my kids will be sleeping in it and I’ll be on my hammock- 5’ is just not long enough.

I’m in Colorado and I hear all three. I prefer bed cap, but it feels like topper is the most popular here.
