I've seen many pictures and posts here where people have added dark Ranger letters to the tailgate. After looking at them I'm considering doing so as well. I have a few questions.

  1. Where did you get them? I saw some on Amazon but am not sure about them.
  2. What type are they?
  3. What did you choose to match your Ranger? For example, my Ranger is Sabre and has the black grill, door handles, and wheels, but really the trim above the fenders and around the grill it is more of a dark grey than a solid black. So would you suggest trying to match that or a black matte?
  4. How hard are they to put on and line up properly? I often have a slight tremor in my hands due to medical issues so having a fine touch is difficult for me. So that leads to the next question.
  5. If I mess it up the first try how easy is it to remove them or correct it?
  6. If I decide later on I don't want them or if they start to fade or something how easy would it be to remove them.
Thanks!

1) TVD Vinyl is where most of us got ours. There are other places though.

2) See answer 1

3) To match the black, go with black (obviously haha), to match the magnetic (dark gray) sport trim, go with Charcoal Metallic, that's what I went with. Otherwise there are plenty of colors to pick from if you want them to stand out a lot.

4) Use the wet install method. Apply soapy water to the surface of the tailgate then put the sticker on that way. Otherwise you'll have a hell of a time. It's all laid out in the instructions that come with it.

5) Using the wet method, you can move them around until the water dries or is wiped away. Once they're on though, you're basically stuck with it.

6) See answer 5

Thank you very much for your help. I think Charcoal Metallic is the way to go because the picture you included matches what I was thinking of. You have good taste in Ranger color choice. :)

So, if I put them on, feel good about it, and say the next day I look at them again and a letter seems a bit off, I'm out of luck as far as removing it?

Thanks again.

I'm sure someone who works in a body shop or decal shop would be able to remove them if need be. But you yourself probably won't be able to get them off. One of the benefits of picking a color that matches the trim, and/or is subtle, is that it only really pops if you're looking for it, otherwise it just kind of looks like it belongs and is easily glanced over.

And while we're talking about it, a decal shop would also put them on nicely as well, since that's what they do, if you're feeling uncomfortable about that. I know some on here have done it that way.

Thanks again, you have been very helpful. I think I'm going to have a shop put them on. That way I won't have to worry about screwing it up and then have to pay someone to fix it. I'm going to copy you and go with the Charcoal Metallic because I like the more subtle look to the letters and it matches the trim better.

I had the TVD Vinyl ones and took them off for the raised ABS ones. These are super easy to instal, maybe 10 minutes. They have 3M tape and you just have to line up the top edge and they basically fall into place. I got mine on eBay.

I have the Platinum White with Magnetic trim (sport) so I went with the magnetic match from TVD. The tailgate is so easy, and to make it easier, I took tailgate off and laid flat on my bar. Super easy to take off, very light. The wet method was really easy to work, and gives you plenty of correction time. Not sure about taking off... I'd be interested in knowing how to take off, my dash is magnetic and I went matte black, too subtle.

They come right off with a hairdryer. Just warm them up and they peel right off. It took me no time to remove mine when I replaced them with the ABS ones.

I like the recess look of vinal, but would you have more of a side view of yours? Just interested in seeing how much of a 3D look it has.

I got mine from PUTCO.com

They are black platinum stainless steel and had a 3M peel and stick adhesive. Make sure the area to place the letters on the tailgate is thoroughly clean and dry before applying. (use alcohol swabs).

I liked these better than the vinyl because they are reflective. No idea how hard it would be to try and remove it after they've been placed on. I made sure to line it up perfectly so I wouldn't get stuck in that situation.

Same answer as above. We love this company. I even ordered USA flags and Canada flag (my wife is from Canada). We used soap water to put it on. Very easy and forgiving.

They don't stick out all that much and I liked the look of these better than the vinyl ones.

Thanks that looks nice and as above you also have great taste in choosing Sabre :) A quick eBay search I could not find in Charcoal Metallic which I think I want to go with.

That's good to know and gives me some conficence to maybe try it myself. So there was no worries about paint damage taking them off with a hairdryer? Also given that, it kind of makes me wonder if my truck is sitting out in the hot summer sun for some time if it would cause the letters to peel or crack? I have a garage but when I'm out and about it sits in the weather for long periods of time.

As far as the 3M letters you went with. Same question, could they be easily removed without paint damage if need be?

I have a saber & picked the same letter color the1mrb picked. I was afraid I would mess them up applying them, so my husband had a decal man put them on. He did a great job, was reasonably priced, & I have not regretted them. They look great! So far, it's the only addition I have braved. It's hard to improve upon perfection! :giggle:
