20+ years ago I had a Mini Van pass me at high speed that very nearly side swiped me. I tried to keep in eye sight of the van as he was drifting across both lanes and was obviously DUI. Just as I was losing sight of him, he ran into the back of an empty 18 wheeler log truck in the right lane at a stop light. I saw a cloud of dust as he hit the trailer but not much else.
The driver tried to swerve to the left at the last minute but didn't quite make it. 3/4 of the roof was peeled back to the rear window and the nose of the car was under the trailer axle. I thought to myself that thus guys had to be dead. I gave the trooper my statement and asked him about the condition of the occupants. His reply has stuck with me all these years.
"He was driving alone and drunk, but he had his dog in the back and it didn't survive."
I asked him how did the driver manage to survive?
"Drunks always survive. They are in such a relaxed stupor that they do not tense up on impact. But everyone one else dies."
He was visibly angry.
I have no idea if there is truth to his comment, but he believed it. And his message has stuck with me for over 20 years now.
