20+ years ago I had a Mini Van pass me at high speed that very nearly side swiped me. I tried to keep in eye sight of the van as he was drifting across both lanes and was obviously DUI. Just as I was losing sight of him, he ran into the back of an empty 18 wheeler log truck in the right lane at a stop light. I saw a cloud of dust as he hit the trailer but not much else.

The driver tried to swerve to the left at the last minute but didn't quite make it. 3/4 of the roof was peeled back to the rear window and the nose of the car was under the trailer axle. I thought to myself that thus guys had to be dead. I gave the trooper my statement and asked him about the condition of the occupants. His reply has stuck with me all these years.

"He was driving alone and drunk, but he had his dog in the back and it didn't survive."

I asked him how did the driver manage to survive?

"Drunks always survive. They are in such a relaxed stupor that they do not tense up on impact. But everyone one else dies."

He was visibly angry.

I have no idea if there is truth to his comment, but he believed it. And his message has stuck with me for over 20 years now.

I have no reason to doubt the officer's statement. I am sure that wasn't the first dunk accident he's seen.

I don't know if there was alcohol involved, but a few years ago I was driving along the highway and the other side was completely empty; further on up the road, I saw why. Somebody in a big old Suburban/Tahoe had rear-ended a flat-bed truck. They must have been really flooring it, because the nose of the SUV was wedged in all the way to the trailer's rear axle and they'd sheared off everything above the engine block into the trunk area. There's no way that there were survivors in that one.

My brother in law is a long haul truck driver based out of SC. Years ago he was severely traumatized when a car ran into his rig at highway speeds and did the same - took the top of the car off and decapitated the driver. He was fully loaded and stopped at a red light. He felt a large bump and got out to investigate. Took the police 30 minutes to get on site.

I'd be traumatized too! Horrible!

I was a firefighter/ medic in a former life (retired)
Had something similar to this. Girl driving a shit box S 10 rolled and rolled on the highway. Truck came apart
When it was done, truck parts were in the east lanes and median . Her and the motor were laying in the west bound fast lane. She was dead instantly.
Im no investigator but id say these old trucks break up from rust around the mounts to the frame.

30 years of death and destruction I believe gives me some personal issues. Worst one I’ve dealt with was a guy cut in half long ways (head down) at a saw mill.
