US Senators Call Out Automotive Execs for Opposing Right to Repair
Automakers excoriated by Senators for fighting right-to-repair

They sell your data to everyone including your insurance agencies, and report your auto location to police without requiring a warrant, but refuse to provide repair data to small shops and individuals.

Interested to see how this plays out.

Its grandstanding to pull wool over voter's eyes. Nothing will come of this but voters will think the government tried to help them.

"The bipartisan group says OEMs are hypocrites motivated by profits and not privacy protection."

Had to laugh at such a profound opening statement, like what else is new .

Should be a law that storing or processing personal data requires 500$/month (yearly inflation corrected) payment from the processor to the owner of the data.

Probably so as automakers as a group spend about $35M or so annually lobbying Congress, gotta get some ROI from that.

Well, in most cases, people give them permission to do that. Do you read all pages of EULA when you install and app, even if that app has nothing to do with vehicles?

Approval or disapproval should not make a difference here. Call it "unalienable" if you will.

You can approve that "yes, you can process my data" but the processor would still need to pay 500$/month to do so.

Should also have an Opt Out option. They can keep their money.

I only use FOSS Open Source applications. and OSes. And Hardware built with privacy in mind.

There are a lot of great options - hardware and software out there to choose from.

So, we have the lowest of the low, politicians, calling out the next to lowest of the low, overpaid auto executives (who are even lower than used car sales people and bus-bench accident chasers).
Now...who are we supposed to believe ???
