I sell cabin filters and I think they are there more to protect the blower motor and HVAC system than to filter pollen.
That's the marketing point of Ford's new ones, to also filter the air for breathing by increasing the filtration to something that they describe in words that sound like a KN95 mask. Subaru (& likely others) has used it as an active marketing point for a number of years.

I can't find any specs on how fine it filters, so it's likely in the typical 100 microns range. The biggest plus is that it's meant to be washed, so in really dirty-air environments (dust, pollen, smoke) it pays for itself. If I was driving more now during the seasonal fires, I'd likely get one soon after I got tired of swapping out the OEM one. From everything I've read, the K&N is a step above other aftermarket cabin filters both in filtering and fit / gasket method used.

The cabin filter is recommended to change at 20,000 miles. The cheap looking thing costs $20. What is all this fuss about a better filter going to cost? Another stupid eco idea that came out of CA.
