So, rotated my tires for the first time last weekend. Already knew the Tremor spare was the same General Grabber on a steel wheel. But what I did not expect to see was the stupid yellow 50mph sticker on the wheel. WTF? It's the same full size tire as the rest of them. Why the sticker?

I get the "other tires worn out this one is taller, hard on the differential" etc. But a spare would only be run briefly so tire height wouldn't be a wear issue on the driveline.

Clue me in folks.

BTW, seriously thinking of buying a Tremor wheel for the spare. Would love to be able to do 5 tire rotations. Trying to figure out how to get that purchase past the Warden.

If I remember correctly the steel wheel is narrower than the alloy wheels. Thus the speed limitation.

Pretty sure it's Ford's way of "C.Y.A.
Tire is same on mine, full size and same brand as OE tires.
Most likely it's a safety measure as the spare tire may sit under the truck for years and years....most owners pay no attention to it till it's needed. It sits under getting wet/dirty/un-cleaned or treated, and may develop cracks or lose air.
Since Ford has no control after the truck is sold, they supply the warning for safety/legal purposes.
Had the same warning on our previous Ford E-450 based motorhome, equipped with the same Michelin tire as the 6 that were on it.

It may also be because the spares are not balanced. But more likely the CYA

im no expert but i think the steel spare rims are basically the exact same as the ones that come on some of the rangers and broncos if you get the steels and not a fancy wheel. the yellow sticker is a liability thing. ive had that yellow sticker rim on and driven hundreds of miles at interstate speeds. i did not have the oem spare tire on it.

I have not pulled down my spare yet but the reason for the sticker is probably because it is a light weight steelie, which means the impact rating is reduced over steel wheels intended for normal use.

I ran into this years ago when looking for light weight steelies for my Mustang. Contacted Aero or one of those brands and they explained theirs are not DOT approved because their impact rating from pot holes and such is reduced due to being light weight.

Easiest way to end this debate is to compare the markings/part numbers on the back of the "spare steel wheel" and an OE steel wheel on a basic Ranger.
Yoda say's......"Do this we must....end this debate it will".
