“Management was not able to fully comprehend and keep track of the details of what was happening on the ground,” he said.
He also acknowledged that workers were feeling pressure to cut corners

My wife is free-lance, and was approached to do contract work for Toyota. One of the caveats was that when HQ in Tokyo emailed you "requesting" a meeting, you had about two minutes to get on the call, which would have meant that she'd have to expect such calls anytime between 9pm-3am our time, assuming a normal 9-5 business day in Tokyo, which is hardly the norm. The reality is more like she'd have been "on call" from 7pm-5am, and they just weren't offering up enough money to make it worth her while. Even the recruiter who contacted her was basically telling her not to take over the gig; the person doing it at the time was quitting because they were so burned out by Toyota's demands.

She also knows someone who owns a small company which is a supplier to Toyota, and who agreed that they shout "Jump!" and expect you to ask "How high?!" on the way up, and if you don't, they'll black-ball you.

Maybe Toyota should start thinking about treating their people & suppliers with a little respect & consideration, and then they wouldn't be cutting corners so much. I realize that this issue isn't unique to Toyota, but the whole experience soured my wife enough on Toyota that she now refuses to consider them for a vehicle in the future.
