I had to use ratchet straps to secure some cargo on top of my tonneau cover on a recent road trip, and they've left these markings on one flank. At first I thought it might just be dust that would come off in the car wash, but that hasn't worked. Any ideas on what will work?

Try some rubbing compound. As long as it's not deep it should come right out.

"Knowing me"??? I can't imagine what you were nervous about.....

Also, thanks, Dave, for moving it to the proper section; I realized after the fact that I put it in the wrong place, but couldn't change it.

Thanks, all, for the advice. Any particular products?

Is it in the clear coat? Might just need a light polishing compound. Don't go too aggressive.
I think so. I don't feel the "ridges" when I rub my fingers over them, so it can't be real deep. That's why I thought that it was just stuck-on residue, because I couldn't feel any damage.

Always be careful when you have your strap-on!
Yeah, I wasn't thrilled with the idea, and I have a plan to rig some bed rails, but I haven't gotten around to it and had to transport some lightweight stuff over two days, so I was hoping that it would be ok.

...and yes, I realize that's probably not the strap-on that you were referring to... :lipssealed:

Don't use your finger pads. Use the edge of a finger nail. It will lightly drag on any slight scratches whereas a pad might not notice it. Use the least aggressive polish you can. Even some waxes labeled as "cleaning wax" have grit in them to buff out slight scratches. To test fro grit, put a small amount on your thumbnail. Rub your other thumbnail on it and you will feel if it has any grit.

They have 3 different compounds but if it's not deep this should work. The other 2 are listed there too.
