I have a 2019 xlt with xm, it came with the tech package. Prior to that purchase i was investigating pretty much the same topic for vehicles without xm.

There seemed to be a system that was standalone that connected inline to stereo but had its own tuner, that is probably going to be your best bet and I think an sold it.

At anyrate, I know Google is your best friend in finding a way either new radio with an or the standalone or the module addition. Good luck

Check this out for example. Xm

My understanding of FM direct is there is no physical connection to the antenna. The unit is a low power transmitter and you pick a frequency that is not used in your area. Then tune your radio to that frequency. Full control from steering.
Also as an XL owner it seems to me making the aux input jack an option is just plain silly.

You are referencing a FM modulator.

I don't have a smart phone. So, those kinds of solutions won't work for me.

The ideal solution would allow me to control the SiriusXM stations from the buttons on the steering wheel.

I looked over the option packages thouroughly on the Ford website. What option includes the satellite radio?
You're better off getting after market stereo. You can get one as cheap as $100. I installed new stereo, amp, replaced door speakers and added hideaway amp/sub woofer. Needed some additional pieces and parts and was all in under $1000. I installed myself with an assist from friend.

None of the ones I looked at work with the backup camera.

Right now I think the best solution is the SiriusXM Onyx Plus: a separate unmounted satellite radio. I will connect it to the in-dash factory stereo via either bluetooth ($10 option) or the FM Direct Adapter (which connects through the antenna).

If that doesn't work out, at least it only cost me $60 and I can look into the $1,000 options later.

Mine works with the back up cam and steering wheel controls. Also other members have reported success swapping their systems. Some only replaced the radio.

What radio did you purchase that works with the back up cam and steering wheel controls?

I installed the Alpine ILX-W650. I used the metra dash kit and wiring harness. I postred in a thread about steps taken to ensure back up cam works with system. Others have used different radios and it worked fine as well.

My display is only 4.2 inches while that display is 7 inches. How can it fit into my dash?

The metra dash kit. I'm guessing you've never installed a after market stereo in a vehicle. Besides using a harness so you're not chopping wires you also need a dash kit to fit the radio.

Yes. I'm researching it now. I figured that out after I posted. I have a question. For something like the Alpine 650, which costs $300, what do you think a professional installation would cost?

Every shop is going to be different. You could try yourself? YouTube is full of videos, as well as members here to ask questions
