RF Interference

zaashf

Hi guys,

So I’m getting into HAM and just installed a TYT TH-9800 in the Ranger. However I’m experiencing a lot of static interference. The antenna is a multiband Bingfu that is lip mounted to the hood. With the antenna removed I still get a lot of interference. From my research I’m guessing it is egress RFI? Also since the hood is aluminum does that decrease the ground plane? Any tips on how to reduce this RFI?

Can you send me the link for your lip mount? I just got my ham license and am looking at getting a mobile unit. Currently I just have the Baofeng...

Lots of times the coax shipped with units has been bent sharply for shipping or they were just junk to begin with. Get a quality coax that is the proper ohm amount and quality connectors on the ends and my hunch is that most if not all your problems will be a thing of the past.

Yeah I probably shouldn’t have cheaped out for a Chinese mount/antenna combo. Hopefully getting a better antenna will improve my reception.

Here is what I got. Gonna return it and get something better.

You are probably getting inducted RFI from the electronics under the hood, you need to move that antenna to the back of the cab, put a filter on the radio's power line, make sure you have a good ground, and as a last resort a low pass filter inline on the coax might help.

If the RFI is heard with the antenna removed and a dummy load in its place, then the interference is likely coming through your power leads. I would start by making sure your unit is grounded well. Also suspect where you are picking up power for the unit. Connection directly to the battery is the best bet and Ford doesn't want any connection to the negative post, rather to a good ground point. As far as your antenna mount is concerned make sure the hood is properly grounded and your antenna is also grounded.
